So you want to make a homemade flea collar with essential oils... eh? I have seen lots of blogs and articles about this and it's really causing me to worry... so I wanted to make sure to get the word out that if you are going to do this... please be careful. It is true that essential oils can be safe for pets if done right. When in doubt, consult with your veterinarian first. So, let's take a look at how this can be safely done.

WARNING!

"Dogs, too, can be harmed by essential oils. However, most agree using non-toxic essential oils in a diffuser for a short period of time is not likely to be an issue, although diffusers should not be used if the pet has breathing problems, is confined to a small space and cannot leave, or a lot of oil is being used." —Yvonne Colbert (CBC News Journalist)

Carrier Oils That Are Considered Safe For Pets

  • Coconut Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Cedar Essential Oil
  • Aloe Vera
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Apricot Kernel Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Kukui Nut Oil

DILUTION OF ESSENTIAL OILS FOR PETS

"Before topical application to a pet’s skin, Essential Oils should always be diluted. A safe ratio is 1 drop of Essential Oil for 1.5 tablespoon (approx. 445 drops) of Carrier Oil. This equates to a dilution of approximately 0.25%, which is considered to be be mild and likely agreeable for pets." —PFEO

Lemon Flea Spray

"Lemon is a great way to repel and kill fleas if you have trouble with them in your home. Many natural flea sprays contain a citrus extract called D-limonene, which repels and kills these biting bugs. Making your own homemade flea spray with lemon is simple, and with it you can keep these pesky little insects away from your home and family."—WikiHow

  • 1 ½ cups (356 ml) vinegar

Using the Lemon Spray on Yourself and around the House

"Fleas don’t like the scent of lemon and will avoid things with this smell. By applying a lemon spray around your house and on your pets, you can drive the fleas away, at least temporarily."—Pippa ElliottPro Tip: Test inconspicuous areas first to make sure it doesn’t bleach or damage the item being sprayed.Pro Tip: Test inconspicuous areas first to make sure it doesn't bleach or damage the item being sprayed.
