Your Time Will Come!

“Trust the process. Your time is coming. Just do the work and the results will handle themselves.” – Tony Gaskins

In a world that is so fast paced, and one in which time is so precious and valuable, it can be extremely hard to exercise patience. These days, many of us can't even go to a grocery store, and not get agitated and frustrated when we see a line up at the checkouts. It's because we know we have far more important things to be doing than wasting time lining up at a supermarket checkout. Having previously worked behind the telling counter at a bank, plus as a checkout manager at a grocery store, there would barely be one day that went by in which there wasn't at least one customer who would complain about having to wait in line. Whilst many companies tend to shortchange the frontline of their business on staff numbers, just to save on costs, much of the time, queues form off the back of an influx of customer numbers, who all seem to have a habit of flocking in at the same time. Not that it's prearranged or anything, it's just that people have the same idea at the same time. Even in the business I run nowadays, many customers basically want their product delivered yesterday, such is the impatience of humankind. When it comes to achieving our goals, success, and wealth, our impatience tends to be at its worst, and most destructive. Most of us know exactly what goals we want to achieve, what we desire, and what will provide us happiness and satisfaction, the problem is, the majority of us don't want to have to work for it. We want it now! Sadly for us though, life doesn't work that way. To achieve our goals, not only is there a lot of hard work involved, but a lot of effort, a lot of energy, a lot of commitment, a lot of dedication, a lot of perseverance, a lot of resilience, and above all, a lot of patience.

For a truly life transforming and meaningful goal to be achieved, it's not something that generally eventuates overnight, in a few weeks, in a few months, or even in a year. These life changing, or significant, goals will more than often, take years to achieve. This is where the problem lies for many individuals. Tell them they will need to work hard, remain committed, deal with numerous challenges, and overcome these challenges, for a few years on end, and guaranteed, they will be quick to become discouraged. Having said that, achieving our goals, and what we should expect along the journey to get there, aren't exactly a topic we are generally educated on. Without this education and knowledge, most people will at least commence the journey towards their goals, yet foolishly enter it with the expectations of success, or at least some form of visual progress, within just a few weeks. Instead, they confront challenges, adversity, rejection, setbacks, and failure, and this fast deflates the motivation and inspiration they began the journey with. Some already concede defeat at this point, and succumb to failure, whilst many will at least carry on, with the understanding that things weren't going to be altogether easy. As the weeks and months tick by though, and still no success, or visual progress, that's where the majority of people give up. Instead of the success they envisioned appearing before them, the challenges and failures continue to roll on instead, leaving them with the belief that the success they desire, is clearly not meant to be. The fact they have waited for months on end, without so much as a hint of reward, leaves them feeling bitter and frustrated, but there's a great deal more patience needed, even at this point along the journey, in order to reach the pinnacle that is success.

It's about the 12 to 24 month mark of the journey, where most people will quit the journey in achieving their dreams, be it the pursuit of a goal, or perhaps the growth of a business. As I hinted above, there's quite often no visual signs of any success or progress, along the journey to our goals, not at least any that meet our expectations anyway. We tend to focus on the goal itself, rather than on the little wins and gains along the way. You see, the longer we persevere along this journey to success, the more learning, growth, development, and maturity, we are actually gaining personally. Why? Because we are learning to problem solve, we are learning how to overcome adversity, we are learning how to be creative, and we are strengthening our characteristics and capabilities. We fail to see this however, because it's not visual success, nor results we can physically see. We may think that this is of no importance, nor does it provide us with the success we seek, however what learning, growth, development, and maturity, are doing for us, is forming the basis of a successful character. It's like weightlifting, for example. Our goal may be to gain some muscle definition, aiming to lift 100kgs, but we can't simply proceed up to the bar and expect to lift that weight instantly. We first need to build and grow that muscle, so we start off at a much lesser weight, and gradually increase the weight over a period of time. Now, as we begin to lift heavier weights, what we don't necessarily see are our muscles increasing in size, yet the weight we are lifting indicates that we are in fact building strength. We are forming the basis for success, and the visual result of that muscle gain will reveal itself in time, provided we continue to do regular weight training, and increase the weights. We shouldn't be focused on the appearance of that muscle, but instead, the strength we are actually gaining in the process. That is success in itself! The road to our goals is no different. Rather than focus on believing that achieving the goal is the only measurement of success, we should celebrate what we are learning along the way, what adversities and challenges we have overcome, and what failures we have picked ourselves up from. Success will come if we continue to persevere, work hard, and remain patient.

Yeah, it sucks, but patience is imperative if we truly want success, and lots of it. What we need to keep doing, is trusting in ourselves, trusting in our abilities, trusting in our decisions, trusting in our actions, and trusting in our instinct. Provided we continue to work hard, make changes to actions that fail to produce results, remain committed, overcome all the challenges and setbacks that are heaved upon us, persevere, remain determined to achieve or goals, and above all, remain patient, then success can become reality. Think about it. Would you be happy if you achieved your goal in 5 years time? Sure you would, because you would be relishing in success, satisfaction, and accomplishment. Would you be happy if you achieved your goal in 10 years time? Same deal, you would also be delighted, however the level of satisfaction would have multiplied, because you would acknowledge just how much hard work, effort, and patience, went into achieving that success. Whilst it's important to focus on the goal you are seeking to achieve, your biggest focus should be on the actions to get there. If they don't work, then change them, and continue making changes until you discover that winning formula. The main thing is to never give up, even when it looks like all hope is lost. Find a way, and just keep going. Embrace the failures and setbacks, and view them as another opportunity to learn and grow. Acknowledge these failures as just another stepping stone on the path to success. It may be difficult, but just be patient, your time will come! Life often rewards those who truly work hard and exercise patience.
