Writing has been in the world since approximately 3200 B.C, and in our lives since we were toddlers, but we never gave it the attention it deserves. It is one of the most important creations of the human being and it can help us in ways we didn’t even think about.

First of all, I think writing connects us. It connects people to people, and it also connects us with ourselves. We can also learn from writing, we can learn about different topics or about ourselves too. The third claim about writing could be that it helps us in many different ways, it can help us to know what we feel about something, or to put our feelings in paper and many other things. Last claim could be that writing improves by writing. These four claims about writing will be explain and supported in the following essay.

To start, the claim that I think most people will agree is that writing connect us. It does it in two different ways, it connects us with different people and it also connects us with ourselves. Firstly, it connects us with other people in a day-to-day basis, in ways that includes sending an email to a coworker, or sending a whatsapp message to our friend, or posting a tweet. These are ways that we always do, and we don’t think about how we are able to do it, but it is all because of writing. Without it, we would not be able to express something we want to say, or to just talk to someone via text. Writing also connects us with ourselves, because by writing our feelings, or our memories, we get to see a moment in a different way, and it can help us deal with that. The psychologist Adam Grant conducted a study that followed recently fired engineers, the researchers found that those engineers who consistently engaged with expressive writing were able to find another job faster says: “The engineers who wrote down their thoughts and feelings about losing their jobs reported feeling less anger and hostility toward their former employer. They also reported drinking less. Eight months later, less than 19% of the engineers in the control groups were reemployed full-time, compared with more than 52% of the engineers in the expressive writing group.” This is a clear example that writing connects us with our feelings in ways that maybe we could not do it in other way and it also help us cope with them in an impressive and effective way.

The second claim I am going to talk about is that we can learn things from writing. For example, in college we have to write a ton of essays. And in these essays, we could either choose the topic or it could be given to us. If it is given to us, we can like it or not like it, but I think that we should always get something good about it. Maybe we can learn things about the topic that we find interesting, or we can learn about a topic that we never heard before and it is actually important or meaningful to us. For example, only by writing here what i feel about writing I have learned what I actually think about writing, which is a thing that has always been in my life but I never gave it too much importance, and it is something that it is important for every person in the world because I think that without it we would be lost and communicating would be much harder.

The third claim is that writing can help us in many ways. I think writing is a way of getting rid of bad memories or bad moments that we had and start to see them from another perspective, more as a way of learning from these bad moments of our life and try to deal with them properly. To support my opinion, I found a research made by Laura Kings, who is a psychologist who studied in the University of Missouri: “Research shows that writing about achieving future goals and dreams can make people happier and healthier... And Jane Dutton and I found that when people doing stressful fundraising jobs kept a journal for a few days about how their work made a difference, they increased their hourly effort by 29% over the next two weeks.” Of course, even though this is an example of people who want to achieve future goals, it shows my point that writing can help in many ways, to help deal with something, as a motivation to achieve something we want, or as a way of getting rid of moments or things in our lives that aren’t as happy as we wish.

My last claim is that writing improves by writing. Of course, when we first start writing we are a bit messy and we write in a disorganized way. But, as we keep writing, practicing, and keep reading how other people write, we start to get better, and all of the things that was difficult, we start to manage them. We start communicating better what we want to say, and it is easier for the reader to understand what our thoughts are. As we improve our writing and get clearer with what we want to say, this will help us in, for example, the work world. In order to get better and better, we have to write and to pay attention to what we are writing to fix our errors and learn from them. I have been writing since I was little, and yet I have a lot to learn and practice, but as I keep doing it, I feel more confident about my work and that makes me feel good.

In conclusion, writing is more important than what we think, it helps us in a lot of ways and it is an useful tool that, without it, we all be lost. We don’t think about it enough, about how it helps us, and we don’t give attention to it, but I think it’s a tool that we will need forever in order to live.
