Writing can be an escape from reality but is not confined to just that. Writing can also be a tool to better understand reality. Writing helps communicate to others more clearly and can even be a way to better understand yourself. Writing also helps us learn from our experiences. Writing is an incredibly powerful instrument and can: explain, teach, amplify your voice, and even persuade people.

Here are just a few reasons to begin writing today!

1. Writing relieves stress. Writing, for many people, can help focus wild thoughts in one direction. Once you have a topic and you're ready to write, or even if you don't have a topic, let the thoughts that come into your head flow onto the paper. It can help organize thoughts from a jumbled mess into a steady stream. It may also help you to better understand the world around you. Another way to relieve stress may be to write fiction. A fictional short story or even beginning a novel could help you get out of your overwhelming reality for a bit to create a world where you decide how things play out.

2. Writing illuminates who you are. Although it is easy to lie to other people about the true thoughts in your head, or just keep them to yourself because they are hard to explain, your own mind cannot hide from itself. When you write it allows thoughts to escape your mind and find their own place on paper, where you can easily see exactly who you are. Even though it takes time to discover your writing voice, what you write about reveals what you care most deeply about.

3. Writing helps to communicate more clearly. Because you have more time while writing to think about exactly how you would like to say what you need to say, it helps to better communicate. If you have a feeling that is indescribable, try writing about it in the form of a poem or a journal entry. Even if it's only for yourself to read, the way you communicate your thoughts onto paper could help you understand more clearly what is going on. Challenge yourself by sharing what you write so that other people can get a glimpse into your mind!

4. Writing now is for future history. All the historical books we have today, had to have been written sometime. One of the main ways people find out about the past is through writings. Document your life so one day future generations can get into you shoes and find out about the world we live in now. Who knows, maybe what you write could end up in a history book someday!

5. Writing never dies. Although we will all die someday, what we write will continue to live on. Your writing could give a glimpse into your life that people will hold onto in the future. Use the power of writing to share truths and be a voice that teaches others. It's very possible that what you write could be able to continually inspire generation after generation even after you are gone.

Those were just five simple tips on why to start writing today. When life is good, write! And when life is hard, write some more. And when you cannot even decipher your own thoughts, write until you find a clarity and your mind can breathe again!
