What is Your B?

What is your goal? How long have you had this goal? Why does it seem impossible to make any progress towards achieving this goal? These are some very important questions to ask in the fitness and health world because too many of us are stuck on the same treadmill of working out without seeing the results. Isn’t that depressing? So how do we change this and get off of this hamster wheel? Set goals, work to achieve them. But to achieve a goal or reach a milestone, we have to clearly define what that goal or milestone is. For us, this is our point B.

For example, would you tell your spouse that you will get groceries, but then you just drive around aimlessly hoping that you will see someone with the bag of apples you wanted? Of course not. If you aren’t familiar with the area, you will probably get on Google and search for the nearest grocery store.

If you are more price-conscious, you may drive a little farther to find a better bargain. If you want convenience, you may either go to the closest grocery store or go to the store with all of the goods you need, regardless of price. You may even choose a grocery store because you just don’t like the people at the other store. I am getting here because we have goals and strategies for everything in our lives, right down to the grocery store that we choose.

So when it comes to goal setting and strategy building in fitness and health, we need to do our research to determine what will work for me, what is my most important goal right now, and how am I going to get there. This is the process of getting from point A to point B.

What Will Work For Me?

There are thousands of people out there telling you what the magic potion is for getting a better body. They may be telling you what worked for them (which may not work for you), or they may just be telling you a bunch of lies in return for your money.

Everyone’s body is different, which means that something may work great for you that doesn’t work for someone else or vice versa. So what is the best approach to the methodology that you should use? I challenge you to use the information given to you in the Playbook and go from there.

The training and nutrition guides work for most people, especially in the earlier stages of weight loss. Then, once you have finished the program, you will begin to start seeing the methods that do and don’t work for you, and you can begin to tweak things from there.

What Is My Most Important Goal Right Now?

To get to a destination, we have to find out what our destination is. So what is your goal right now? What is your greatest driving motivation to be fit? Is it to be a better example to your kids of what a healthy lifestyle looks like, is it to look good for your next blind date, or is it because you want to run in the next Tough Mudder and want to finish the race without passing out? There are millions of motivators that drive us to be fit and to feel good about ourselves.

The important question then becomes: is this motivator enough to make me work hard enough to reach my goals? Too often, we want to get fit, but we don’t want it badly enough. If you can’t seem to find consistent time to work out or decide to cheat on your diet just this once…or twice…a day, then there is a good chance that the motivator isn’t great enough.

Once you can define your next goal and are motivated to reach that goal, it will make the process a whole lot easier to conquer.

How Am I Going To Get There?

Now that we have figured out that we have an A and B, we have to focus on the line between them. This is the process of getting from the point you are at now to the point that you want to be in the future. The great part about this is that you will always be able to define a process if you have defined the A and B points.

For example, if I want to play in the NFL, my A is where I am at now, and my B is the NFL. The process then becomes training towards getting to the NFL. I would be doing a lot of heavy lifting, explosive moves, and working on my speed. If I wanted to become a ballerina instead, I would want to focus on my balancing techniques.

The bottom line is that the process has to fit the goal, which sounds obvious, but it is one of the most common reasons people do not reach the milestones they are striving for.

Putting It Into Action

If you want to bust out of the rut you are in and start to gain momentum on your goals, there are some calls to action that will help you get started. The most important tool is knowing that you need a process, so you already got the hardest part out of the way. The next tool is a pen and a piece of paper. I want you to write down where you are now. Don’t lie to yourself! It depends on your goal, but this will include taking measurements, doing the fit test, and taking pictures.

Next, write down what your goals are and be specific! What are your motivations, what do you want to look like, who do you want to set a good example for? Lastly, in this little notebook, take yourself through the process. What is it going to take to get there? What are the exact things that you are going to have to get through to overcome the obstacles you are currently facing?

After all of this is written down, you will need to come back to the notebook on a weekly basis and chart where you are in the process. If a couple of weeks have gone by and you have nothing to show for it, you may need to go back to the drawing board and start over. One other tool for dominating the process is your friends.

Tell them what your goals are, and tell them to be honest with you while you go through the process. They will be there for you and help you along the way. If you continue to work hard and stay to the plan, the results WILL start to show.

So, what is YOUR B?
