There are many ways to approach wellbeing. It might be a way to improve your health, a way to manage anxiety, or simply the pursuit of happiness.

In the past decade, there have been numerous studies conducted on wellbeing. Some of these were funded by various government agencies, and others were not. In total, over 100 articles were reviewed in order to get a good snapshot of finding from all over the world.

Here are three of the most popular ways to improve your overall wellbeing.

3 Ways To Wellbeing:

1) Physical Health:

One of the most common ways that people seek out for their own personal development is by looking after their physical health. The reason for this is because your physical health can have a huge impact on how you feel mentally and emotionally.

This is not to say that you cannot be happy or get along with people if you are in pain or sick, but rather that the more fit and healthy you are the better it is for your overall wellbeing.

The best thing you can do for your physical health is to maintain a regular exercise routine. Doing this helps to increase endorphins, which are naturally occurring substances that trigger positive feelings during and after exercise.

Additionally, it releases other chemicals like dopamine which act as natural anti-depressants. If you suffer with anxiety or depression then exercising is one of the most effective ways to help manage it. It is important not to exercise with the sole purpose of burning off calories or getting rid of stress, but rather do it because you enjoy doing it and want to do more of it.

Exercise doesn't have to mean going to a gym either. There are many forms of exercise, so if you enjoy walking or swimming, then do it! Just be sure to start small with your exercise routine and build it up over time.

If building an exercise routine is too strenuous for you at the moment, then simply incorporating more movement in your day-to-day life is also beneficial. For example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking to a colleague's desk instead of phoning them, or going for a walk at lunchtime.

2) Socialising:

Getting involved with other people is another great way to improve your overall wellbeing. We all have social needs and spending time with others makes us feel good about ourselves.

Being social doesn't have to be about partying all the time either, or constantly checking your Facebook. It is simply about realising you are not alone and other people's presence can help to alleviate feelings of loneliness.

So, whether it means joining a group activity, volunteering at an animal shelter, spending more time with your friends and family, or simply having time to yourself, be sure to take the opportunity to socialise when it is presented and do not feel like you have to go out all the time.

3) Mindfulness:

A final way that people improve their overall wellbeing is by practising mindfulness. This refers to being present in the moment and is a great way to prevent feelings of anxiety or overwhelm. Practising mindfulness can be as simple as focusing on your breathing for a few minutes each day, taking time to appreciate what you have, or learning how to meditate.

If you are feeling overwhelmed by your life it might not be a bad idea to take some time out to go on a mindfulness retreat or just have a few days away from your daily responsibilities.

When it comes to being healthy, socialising and practising mindfulness, the best way to get started is by making small adjustments in your normal routine. Whether that means going for a walk at lunchtime every day or starting to eat more healthy foods.

The key is to focus on the journey and not the end goal, as this prevents you from feeling overwhelmed.
