Today she would leave Fear. She was in pursuit of something better. There had always been something better. She just couldn’t see the possibilities until now. Her eyes had been shielded. She trailed along blindfolded, holding Fear’s hand and letting it guide her decisions in life. She had obeyed all of Fear’s commands, seeking peace and, most of all, safety.Fear had told her when to stop, when to avoid, and when to isolate. That was all that her companion, Fear, knew how to do. Fear was there to guide her away from danger, pain, and sadness. Fear helped her find alternate routes to take when there was a threat coming up on her path.

On this day, she was following Fear and decided to peak under her blindfold. She was curious about this place where they had found sanctuary. When she removed the blindfold, she was startled by what she saw. She had let Fear guide her and she had felt safe, comfortable even. Yet, when she looked at her surroundings, it was nothing like she had imagined. She thought she would have control, but she couldn’t control anything there. Everything was in auto pilot and there was no way to turn it off. She thought she would have peace, but her mind was flooded with worry.

She looked for a switch, a plug, or a button, but she didn’t find anything. This place just kept on with no way to stop it. Nothing was moving at a good pace. She either couldn’t keep up, or moved ahead too soon. This place was miserable. She couldn’t understand how she got there. She trusted that fear had had her best interest in mind, but it led her into complete chaos. She realized that she couldn’t follow fear anymore. If she did, she would surely be in danger.

Fear tried to reason with her for a while. Fear tried to tell her that she might possibly go down a path that leads to something far worse. That she might possibly find a path that was impossible to travel without getting hurt. While Fear was reasoning with her, Courage stood nearby listening. Then, after hearing Fear’s side, Courage realized something and stepped in to defend her escape. Courage reasoned that if something terrible was only possible, it didn’t mean that it would happen. Courage told her that there was also a possibility of the opposite happening.

Courage reminded her where she was in that moment and how unhappy she was. She knew she would never be happy there. Courage reminded her that it was fear who led her there— that there could always be somewhere better. She felt a sense of hope after listening to courage and realized that the revelations were true. She could not stay there with Fear. She felt a moment of relief and Fear tried to take that away from her. Fear was about to say something else to persuade her, but she stopped it from saying another word. She had had enough of Fear. She was ready to leave Fear and follow Courage. Today, she would let go of Fear and break all ties with it. So, she and Courage prepared to leave.

Right before she and Courage began walking, she started to put the blindfold back on. Immediately, Courage stopped her from putting it on. Courage told her that she no longer needed the blindfold, now that they would be together. Fear had blindly led her and she ended up in the wrong place. This time, with Courage, she would find the best way with open eyes, looking at her options without fear dictating her choices.
