Freedom and love are boy and girl fairy-tale children, walking a country path hand in hand through a bucolic spring landscape, with sunshine and maybe just one tiny cloud in the sky.

When you’ve got it there ain’t nothing-else

can ever make you feel the same

but you’re gonna have to fight to keep it

from slipping away

Very few people have ever set out to establish a system of government that guarantees freedom, and when the founding fathers of The United States of America did it I imagine it was greeted with varying degrees of skepticism around the world. Ideas of that time were lofty, and they were aimed at giving the common man responsibility for his fate. I also imagine that anyone with any responsibility for governing a country sat back and said to themselves, “now let’s just see what happens, shall we?”

Everybody will attack it

a lot of snakes want it gone

so, they can slither back into the darkness

where they do their best work from

The United States of America was an experiment then, but it went on to become the model of self-government it is now; so much so that other countries began adopting at least some, if not most, of the points that make it a light in the darkness that shines brightly on hidden corruption around the globe. The truth is, however, it’s still an experiment. It always will be an experiment – a constant work in progress. There are those within it that flaunt its laws by using them creatively to subvert individual freedoms, those that glorify a past that never existed, and those who do not wish to share any part of themselves to uphold a vision of freedom for all.

Freedom, freedom, freedom is never free

you’ve gotta fight real hard to keep it

from those that want you on your knees…

from those that want you on your knees

Since the beginning we have gone through lots of turbulent times; freedom produces turbulent times. Everybody is free to have any idea they feel like having, they’re free to go where they wish and do as they like as long as they don’t harm anyone, or contravene any laws. It’s a simple concept, but it’s way better than living under an ignorant despot whose whims you have to follow, who you’re not allowed to criticize, and whose praises you must sing every time an eye opens on you.

Never free, never free

freedom is never free

Dictators and their regimes do not like writers or artists; that is the reason free speech was the first amendment to the constitution. There is very little to do under a dictatorship, the only currency is ratting someone out. Every day is the same, everyone dresses the same, there is zero opportunity to follow the simplest desire, or even to have an unsanctioned thought. Your mind is made up for you from birth to death and you have to live under laws that your human nature rebels against; it’s quite simply un-American.

Freedom, freedom, freedom is never free

you’ve gotta fight real hard to keep it

from those that want you on your knees…

from those that want you on your knees

Look at what is happening in Ukraine; that’s the kind of fight that happens when a dictator wants to take your freedom away. You have to stand up for it, be brave and be prepared to die for it. Unless we defeat this need of others to rule and control our lives, we are always going to be plagued by dictators and despots. We have to create a better world where everyone is equal and dedicated to the eradication of autocracy.

Freedom’s a wonderful feeling, and everybody likes it, so, let’s keep it!
