Is Your Self-Worth Buried in Your Back Pocket?

Here's how to own your value

Have you found yourself here lately?

You are knee-deep in feeling insecure or not enough. It’s a familiar place. You’ve been here so often before in fact, that you’ve been given an assigned parking space.

It’s uncomfortably comfortable. It’s what you know, and most likely all you’ve ever known.

Now imagine that someone who has your best interest at heart, and probably loves you unconditionally, is standing at your side. They tell you how wonderful you are, and take the time to share example after example as proof. They assure you that what you are feeling isn’t the truth. It’s just a conversation that you’re having with yourself.

Why can’t you see yourself through their eyes?

You can hear their voice, and they’re speaking your language, but you can’t understand what they’re saying. Remember watching the Peanuts cartoons with Charlie Brown and Snoopy? When the teacher or another adult would talk it sounded as if they were underwater? It sounds just like that. Your brain accepts and processes the words, but to your ears or your heart, it’s just garbled noise.

You don’t see yourself the way that the world sees you. It’s nothing personal, no one can do that 100 percent of the time.

But I promise that you can learn to do it with a 97 percent success rate.

I’ve coached hundreds of people, and here’s what I’ve learned: Our nature or wiring has us searching for the proof of our self-worth outside of ourselves. We take our best selves out into the world, and see how folks will react.

We also race around trying to accomplish the “thing” that will finally validate us, the income, body size, the car, the house, and on and on we go.

It’s a waste of energy, because if we do achieve the goal, we’ll only reset the mark and create a new “thing.” It’s an ongoing chase.

We will never be enough.

What I realized not long ago is that our true value, and everything we are designed to be is already located inside of us. It is in there and patiently biding time. We just need to excavate it, breathe life into it, and let it expand.

Again and again and again. Until it becomes our truth, and we own it like our shoe size.

It is buried inside, sometimes very deep, and there are moments when it peeks out. Like in those rare moments when you just know that you are incredible, and nothing can shake it. You hang onto that for a minute or two until it slowly slips out of reach. Or maybe you’re daydreaming of what you can accomplish, and the inspiration and momentum lifts, and propels you as far as you’ll let it. You coast along until you find yourself back on the ground you launched from, or just a few feet up the road if you’re lucky.

These are the moments when you own your value. The goal is to live, breathe, and run your life from this place, non-stop.

When you find yourself disconnected, and looking outside of yourself for the solution, take a moment to pause and look inside yourself. Remember those moments of clarity and plug yourself back into those feelings for as long as you’re able to.

This is where the solution lies. And I promise that the more often you catch yourself in the mire, and repeat this practice, the more it will take hold and become your unconscious go-to.

We have the ability to rewire our brains, and your lack of self-worth isn’t hardwired.

Thank goodness.

Celebrating your success.
