I wanted a side hustle, I started writing…regrets vs accomplishment

When the pandemic hit and jobs became rare, many persons turned to the online job market to get a new job or acquire extra money. This has been a challenge to everyone in the unemployment market, this far. More so, some persons are still struggling to get a foot in the door on a lucrative side hustle. Today, I want to share my experience from last December to now how we’ll writing has been for me as a side hustle.

How I started writing as a side hustle.

Disclaimer: So far I have not made a lot of money from writing as a side hustle. Most of my money was achieved from tutor since I am graduate student.

How I started writing seemed from my love of reading books over watching movies and stories. I am not the best writer I think I just barely meet minimum writing skills. But I love to express my thought through words, as it gives the reader the ability to envision what I feel through my words.

I decided to take my want of writing public after I came across an article that outlined compelling points why writing can become a lucrative side hustle. I was intrigued and need the extra cash to support finances for school. That was the origin of the blog peppingyourstep. Yes from the money I earned through tutoring I invested it in hosting and started up that blog, but things did not work out the way I had hoped.

The blog took money than I had budgeted for and it became too burdensome to write lengthy articles, tutor, study and also do maintenance. So only have a few month I shut down the blog, unfortunately it was too late to get reimbursed. It wasn’t after I came across an article that mentioned Medium.

Medium was my opportunity to keep writing without the hassle of maintenance of a personal blog. Now I can write when I want, read other articles, and share my ideas honestly. What’s more with less stress I get constant flow of ideas to write about. My tutoring profits are up and I can focus more on my own academics as well.

What have I earned from 10 months of writing

From 10 months of writing, I have earned $100 flat. This money entirely came from affiliate links advertised on my blog. I was excited to see the first $5 rolled in. It felt good, then the next day I got the next $95 from an ad on clothes. The next day I expected more, but it never came. Two months later and I am still waiting on more. What was even worse I had to give up this $100 to maintain the website. Even since I haven’t made any more money from writing.

It was an exciting but quick end to the lucrative business I thought I was developing as a part-time writer.

Do I have regrets about starting writing as a side hustle?

No, I don’t! So far I have not made any money since that $100 from my last blog. It would be great if I could make more or start a lucrative side hustle, but so far I have made it yet.

More articles I have come across detailed the timeline for making money from writing takes at least a year, and for some even two years. So I am not giving up hope. I’m he meantime I will continue writing because I love writing now, and the more I write the better get.

What have I accomplished from this experience?

The roller coaster ride I am on writing for leisure has its benefits. Allow me to share with you a few of the things I have learned:

  1. My writing skills have developed significantly over the pass 10 months. I am better able to express my feelings and thoughts in way I haven’t been able too before.
  2. I discovered Grammarly, which has been a lifesaver. This program thought me how to write, spell check, punctuate, and grammar check all my writing. Even my text messages are spell checked and grammar checked.
  3. I have learned to develop ideas and coherently piece alternate ideas together, then express them in ways easily understood by others.
  4. Writing has given me a positive outlet to voice my thoughts and frustration.

My last words to you

Writing can indeed be a lucrative business for some, I, unfortunately, have not gained much money from writing, As yet at least. It doesn’matter what first made you into a writer, it matter that you learn from each and every experience. Writing is a meaningful experience with lots to teach only if you are patient.

I know many persons have wrote about the amount if money they have made, but if u haven’t I not give up hope. Start writing because you want to share your ideas and experience with others, while I don’t have clues how to start making money from this business, I want to you know the you are not only in the fight to a good side hustle.

Lastly, even if you never gain much money from your writing, learn how to communicate better with those around you. Keep hope and say a prayer every time you publish an article. I do every time. I enjoy writing too much to stop because I haven’t made money from it. In the meantime, take up another hobby that you are good at to help bring in extra cash.
