How to Wake up Earlier

And a step by step morning routine for a productive day.

Listen, I know how hard it can be for people to get out of bed, especially if you’re not a morning person. It’s tough. But, I’ve done a little research, and tried some of these tips out, and I’ve put together all of my favorites to help you not only wake up earlier, but to have a great morning as well.

1. Get a good night's sleep.

If you plan on waking up earlier, you need to get at least seven hours of sleep. Yes, that means going to sleep at a reasonable time. Sleep not only helps your motivation, but also your mental and physical health. Another thing that helps is going to sleep and waking up at a certain time.

2. Plan your day the night before.

Get your to-do lists in order, and pick out your outfit. I also want you to take a minute before you go to sleep, and visualize how you want your morning to go—how you want to feel, what you want to make sure you do. Tell yourself you are going to have a good morning, and figure out what you need to do to make that happen.

3. Make an upbeat and uplifting playlist.

There is nothing like hearing your favorite songs first thing in the morning. Now put on that beautiful smile, think positive thoughts, and start your day.

4. No more procrastinating getting out of bed.

Whether it is getting a glass of water, going to the bathroom, or just opening the damn blinds to let in the sunshine, just get out of bed and don’t you dare crawl back in it for the rest of the day.

5. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

There is something so satisfying in an ice cold glass of water, especially as soon as you wake up. You’ll thank me later. It wakes your body and mind up, so you can get a head start on your day.

Now for the actual morning routine.

1. Wake up for another beautiful day.

Recite your affirmations first thing, read an inspiring quote, or just text a loved one.

2. Time to roll out of bed.

First thing's first: Open your blinds before you do anything, even if the sun is not up yet, because sun pouring into your home is such a nice feeling when you wake up. Use the bathroom, and brush your teeth. Another thing that I’ve found that helps me wake up a little is making my bed, and looking at it once it’s all done gives me a sense of motivation to move on to the next task. It gets your body going, and the juices flowing in your brain.

3. Jumpstart your day.

Remember that playlist I said to create? Turn it on, and all the way up, baby! Dance around your house or room, and get the blood flowing. Get your wiggles out. This is by far my favorite step on the list. It helps my mood tremendously.

4. Don’t forget to take care of your physical health, too.

Go for a 10 minute walk, then do a quick 10-30 minute workout, still jamming to that playlist. Pinterest, by the way, is amazing for little workouts if you have targeted areas you want to work on, or even full-body workouts. After your workout, squeeze five minutes of light yoga or stretching. And you’re done! You did it! Golden sticker for you!

5. Get ready.

Take a shower, do your hair and makeup, put some cute clothes on, and take some selfies, because I can assure you—You look gooooood, honey, okay, like, three course meal good. So give yourself a mini photoshoot; you deserve it. But while you get ready, I want you to visualize how you want your day to go, and think of things you can do to ensure your day goes the way you just pictured.

6. Gather your thoughts.

Check the to-do list you made up last night and schedule out your day, making the more difficult tasks the first on your list. Get them out of the way. Go on Pinterest and look up “#didyouknow,” so you can learn something new and interesting every day. Grab your journal, and write it at the top of the page. And while you have your journal out, reflect on how your day was yesterday: the good, the bad, and the ugly, what you liked and disliked, and write down how you can do better today. Keep that journal out for one last thing: Express your gratitude.

I know every day is unpredictable, but you are in charge of how you take it. You can have a positive attitude, or you can be as negative as possible. But I can tell you now, your day will be so much better if you keep it positive. Let things roll off your back. Problems and set backs are only as big as you make them; that’s what my mom always told me. And ever since, I’ve tried to keep it in the back of my mind, every day.
