“If you are depressed you are living in the past if you are anxious you are living in the future, if you are at peace, you are living in the present.” — Lao Tzu

I have had weird experiences discussing this with friends and acquaintances. Somehow, the world doesn’t get it.

Let’s visit this conundrum and see how to set things straight.

Who am I to discuss the meaning of inner peace?

Well, this article comes from someone who described himself as “reckless” when asked by a professor in college for a little introduction called “describe oneself in one-word”.

Having had my shares of ups and downs similar to frequency transmitter detectors, I can share a bit of experience on the inner peace definition.

I remember having the conversation with a friend who thought that if only something could happen, he may lose the activeness by gaining internal calm and would prefer the mind to be active all time.

Well, this shows a pure lack of understanding of the subject and complete loss.

What is Inner Peace?

It’s an active state of being at peace with your inner self when the entire world around you may be going crazy.

Consider a swimmer smoothly floating in a river or a firefighter taking on the wildest of fires while the world around is in state of panic and distress.

It can be as easy as letting go while resting under the shade of an old tree. Furthermore, it can be as hard as endlessly proving oneself to every other person you confront.

When you have inner peace, you entirely accept yourself not wasting your time, energy, and attention on trivial and meaningless thoughts.

Your wisdom and understanding through experience keeps you calm and strong in times of distress.

Being in the moment without overthinking about the situations at hand is the best form of experiencing this phenomenon.

Following are beautiful quotes to live by:

“The life of inner peace, being harmonious and without stress, is the easiest type of existence.” by Norman Vincent Peale

“If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else.” by Marvin Gaye

The mind is like that unfortunate store-room of the house that gets packed with useless stuff.

Did you by any remote chance happen to visit your store-room recently? Probably not.

Take a stroll, see how it looks, and analyze.

You’ll find it jampacked with stuff that may or may not be used regularly. I need you to focus on this bit a little more. When did you last use any of the things from that room? Occasionally yes, but the chances are rare. Things are eventually going to rot only to be disposed of without any future use.

That’s how we use our minds. We keep loading it with things only to cramp up space.

Now, back to that store-room of yours. Since the room is a complete mess, you try clearing it up. It took time and effort and you eventually made it clean by removing stuff that wasn’t required.

Pretty sure it looks the part now after the cleanup activity giving you a sigh of relief and happiness.

Suddenly you find that the room was big and had ample space. There is more to see, and more to walk which gives you happiness and a sense of freedom and power.

Connect the same with your life, and you’ll see the difference. The more you declutter, the better and peaceful it becomes.

How to have inner peace when the world distracts you?

The once reckless guy has few suggestions.

Check out the 7 things you can do right now:

Observe what bothers you and action

Simple. Isn’t it. How many of us follow this? Not many. The problem lies in the fact that we don’t observe our thoughts. To be fair, how would you? There is a stream of thoughts running in your head. We avoid and then we avoid again reaching the utmost level of frustration due to inaction.

Any un-actioned thought is a brain mine waiting to explode. While we all are overtly conscious about our exterior self, we seldom put thought to the inner struggle we resist every moment.

The pursuit of happiness: Stop

We struggle here. Happiness is elusive to most of us now since we attach acquisitions with it. The happier you are, the more peaceful you get. The art of staying happy is lost as we correlate happiness with the purchases we make.

Someone wants to buy a house, car, or that expensive new phone, and failure to achieve the desired product is a cause of distress. Only when you truly give in to inner happiness, there can be absolute peace.

Chasing momentary pleasures for happiness can never bring inner peace for the pleasure will be short-lived always.

Find your true purpose. You were not born to be miserable daily.

If only acquisitions made you happy and peaceful, are you there?

The idea of finding happiness is flawed. It’s around you all the time.

De-clutter your world

Just take a few minutes to de-clutter your workspace or the room you’re in. While working on your laptop, work with minimum opened tabs. A simplified and organized space around you brings clarity and order to the mind.

Try living in a relaxing environment by simplifying things around you.

Few examples would be:

  • Clean bed
  • Organized room
  • Fewer things around you
  • Neat wardrobe

Meditate (Don’t like the word- Ok, sit in silence)

I could go on and on praising this. Meditation for inner peace is a game-changer. Unfortunately, we completely ignore this wonderful technique and its benefits.

Anyone can practice meditation. Not to mention, it’s free and simple.

Meditation has been around for thousands of years and was used by saints and mystics to help deepen the understanding of the sacred and mystical forces of life.

Meditation requires you to focus your attention and eliminate the stream of mixed thoughts that may be crawling in your mind and causing stress.

As per research studies, meditation wipes off your stress and enlighten you with a different perspective that helps maintain calm.

My last 50-day journey had me found the below benefits.

  • Increased patience and tolerance
  • Attaining a new perspective on stressful situations
  • Enhanced self-awareness
  • Focusing on the present moment
  • Reduced negative emotions
  • A deep sense of calm and energy

Make small routines

Trivial but critical. This exercise rewires your brain into a control mode. Our mind loves to control and accomplishing things.

Little daily routines enforce the belief of accomplishments.

Moreover, you design a pattern that is exclusively yours giving you power and control over your life.

This will provide you inner peace.

Disconnect now and then

Disconnect entirely or limit your internet or social activity. Avoid the nemesis of continuous scrolling of your smartphone to check what someone cooked, ate, and did in their life.

Believe me, its useless and not important.

Spend more of your weekends with undivided attention to your family, friends, hobby, or maybe being out with mother nature embracing the beauty it has to offer.

Accept as is. Let go of the past or any unpleasant experiences.

Living in the present moment is the supreme power.

Let go of any past baggage you may carry. Easier said than done, you might argue. Unless you propose a better way, stick to living in now while accepting the past experiences or life in general.

Our problem is that we identify with the past and anticipate the future. The issue is we lose the present moment stuck between the two.

We can only control the now and truly live well.

So, what now…

Inner peace begins the moment you choose not to allow any person or event to control your emotions.

Inner peace is the new success, just like health is the new wealth.

Take control of your life for a better version of yourself. We can not control everything that comes our way, but we can certainly keep a tab on our emotions and the way we react.

In the end, it only boils down to the decisions we took when the challenge came.

You can find numerous inner peace courses online through various websites. Even your Facebook page can throw you multiple groups dedicated to the teachings.

Youtube is a source of almost every information these days. You will find videos by the dedicated masters in the field.

Whatever works for you can be tried. The first step is the willingness to work upon yourself and getting out of the rut. Everything else follows.

Leaving with a few beautiful inner peace quotes:

“I am content; that is a blessing greater than riches; and he to whom that is given need ask no more.” — Henry Fielding

“We can never obtain peace in the outer world until we make peace with ourselves.” -Dalai Lama XIV
