Death By Chocolate

In a small country town, down a quiet street, just off the main road lived a young suburban couple. Sandy, who worked in retail and her Fiancé Weld, who got joy out of working with big manly tools.

Sandy wasn’t a very tall lady, she had dark wavey hair, caramel coloured complexion and loved to dress in all sorts of colours. Sandy had a very optimistic outlook on life and always said ‘YES’ to offers that involved moving to a new town, new job or trying something different. She loved a good mental stimulating work out and was very confident in meeting new people, such a social butterfly Sandy is.

Weld, on the other hand … Medium height, orange beard and Ash-blonde coloured hair. His personality was very different to Sandy, he was very quirky and a fast thinker when it came to jokes, a very realistic man who was happy to eat the same meals and wear the same similar clothes every day. He was a ‘plan’ orientated man who loved to watch Thursday night Footy.

“WELD, are you home??”

Sandy shouted as she was walking through the hallway of her old rustic home.

“Ruff, Ruff” her little pooch replied, scratching at the door impatiently waiting to come inside.

“Hi Cocoa, my friend. How are you today poochie? I drove around the town and it is so quiet, not a soul in site, but so much to see”

As Sandy opened the door in ran her dog, giving the biggest dog smooch you ever did see.

“Goodness me Cocoa, you are very excited today. Did you miss me?”

Giving Sandy kisses was Cocoa’s way of say yes, well, so Sandy thought.

“Let’s go to the kitchen to get a drink Cocoa, are you thirsty?” Sandy mumbled to her dog as she danced down the hallway to the kitchen.

Their very old rustic home was like being in a live musical, every foot step that hit the floor was echoed back with a creak in the wall or tapping response in the floor boards.

The roof often made a very odd scratching noise when it was a hot summers day, Weld often said it was the wood expanding but Sandy wasn’t entirely sure on Weld’s explanation as he was quite the jokester.

Sandy loved her old home and imagined all the ways the previous owner lived.

A few hours went by and Weld still wasn’t home which wasn’t unfamiliar, he worked some long hours and if he wasn’t at his workshop, he was out doing work at a job site which suited Sandy just fine, she could watch her programs and talk with her friends until he came home.

8pm Tuesday night Weld walked in the door, his eyes almost falling out of his head and his voice very quiet

“Hello love” he said as he put his keys on the bench and headed out to the patio to relax for a minute.

“Long day today?” Sandy responded

No words spoken just a gentle nod of a very tired mans head as he sat in his favourite chair browsing his phone.

“I made a fresh chocolate cake; would you like a slice?” Sandy asked

“Yes please” his tired voice replied

The job opportunity Weld was offered was a very busy job with high demand, so he was hardly ever home when they first moved to Ritecove.

Ritecove, a small Country town 4 hours’ drive from the city, the couple was used to.

It had all the essentials anyone needed to live off plus a beautiful river flowing through, old historic buildings and so many stories to share. Very different to the Suburban life the young engaged couple had in the city, so much so Sandy was excited to see the sights.

“Weld!” Sandy yelled excitedly as she was getting him a slice of chocolate cake.

“I drove through the town today, WOW what a beautiful place we have moved too. Did you know this town has so much History?” As she put the slice of chocolate cake on the plate, hearing no response from Weld, she peaked out the window to see what he was doing.

There Weld was, a sleep in his chair snoring so peacefully.

“Ohhhh Weld” she muttered, as she walked towards the bathroom to turn the shower on for him

“The shower is running; your clothes are in there too. Go have a shower love, and I will get our dinner ready.”

Slowly Weld got off his seat, eyes hardly able to stay open, placing his phone on the bench and walking the smallest steps to the bathroom.

You could hear the pitter patter of Cocoas paws running so quickly to catch Weld as he walked down the Hallway

“Hello cocoa, I hope you have been behaving today and not making to much noise” A tired Weld whispered.

“Ruff, Ruff” Wagging her tail eager for a pat, sat Cocoa.

“You’re a good girl Cocoa, keeping mum company” a conversation Sandy heard between Cocoa and Weld.

Cocoa was a cute brown dog who wasn’t at all small like Sandy would tell people, she was about 40kgs and very hairy. People would often ask Sandy what kind of dog Cocoa was and Sandys’s response would always be the same ‘a brown cute hairy dog who loves to cuddle’.

Not very familiar with dogs, Sandy had to ask Weld on numerous occasions what kind of dog Cocoa is.

Plating up dinner in the kitchen stood Sandy, waiting for Weld to finish his shower

“Your favourite for dinner tonight love, Spaghetti”

Sandy said trying not to burn her hand on the hot pot.

As Weld walked down the hallway, head slightly facing down concentrating on each step he took towards the dining room and eyes glancing around the room

“On the table” Sandy said as she knew Weld would be looking for the TV remote.

Like no one had spoken Weld asked “Do you know where the TV remote is?”

“On the table” she repeated again.

Welds favorite TV show was on, a crime scene series which was filled with so much action and non-stop crime. Weld loved his Action movies where Sandy was more into Reality TV or Romance.

A few moments passed as Weld was indulged in his TV series, standing as close to the TV as possible

“Weld, dinners getting cold, come on” Sandy said with an irritation in her voice

Weld often fazed out the world for a few hours after work, where he would do nothing more than eat dinner and watch TV with minimal words spoken.

On this warm starry Tuesday night Weld could barely keep his eyes opened, as he grabbed his plate of food and walked to the couch.

A different kind of dinner night for Sandy, grabbing her food and heading to the couch to eat dinner by Weld.

“Here’s your drink love” a very calm Sandy said

As Weld grabbed the drink from Sandy’s hand with a smirk and blinking ever so slowly

Sandy sat on the couch, eating her dinner messaging her best friend about her adventurous day

“Weld, Kay and Dee are coming for a visit this weekend. We might head to Forestcove for a picnic or something?”

Very interested in his TV series a very tired Weld looks up at Sandy and quietly says

“Yes, sounds good”

Weld often had this very soft look when Sandy made plans for the weekends, He felt a little bad that Sandys family and friends had to travel to see them, not that it worried Sandy though she always said ‘if they want to, they will visit, if not we will see them when we go to the city’.

Sandy was quite open-minded when it came to her family and friends because she knew with modern technology, she would not be missing out on much but also loved it when everyone come to fill her home with joy and laughter.

“Slice of chocolate cake, love?” As Sandy grabbed the dinner plates and skipped towards the kitchen

“No thank you, I might go to bed now. It’s been a long day” A sleepy Weld replied

“Okay, take Cocoa with you and leave my pillows alone ok!” Sandy said in a very cheeky tone

The Engaged couple often made jokes about the pillows.

Sandy loved to have 2 pillows so she could be matching with Weld but 99% of the time the pillows would end up on the floor and Weld would be sure to make sure he told her about it too.

The couple were always joking with each other and Sandy often shared some of the most random things with Weld about her big dreams she had, and almost always Weld would roll his eyes knowing exactly the crazy adventure Sandy would go on until she achieved those dreams.

Early Wednesday morning 4am Sandy woke up after having the weirdest dream

“Weld, are you awake?” she said

“aha, Good morning love, why are you awake so early? Did you have a dream about that chocolate cake?” He cheekily answered

“How did you know I had a dream about the chocolate cake?” Sandy asked curiously

“You were sleep talking about that slice of chocolate cake you got me” He giggled

“Oh yes, that slice of chocolate cake was like magic but my dream was so weird” As she reached for her diary, turning on her lamp, Sandy started to write down the dream

“What happened?” The realistic Weld asked as he hopped out of bed to get ready for his busy work day ahead

“Well, I made that scrumptious chocolate cake yesterday and, in my dream, I died by eating that slice of chocolate cake. Do you remember me telling you about that bird that always visits me when I have my morning coffee Weld?” Before Weld could even get a word in Sandy continued to share her story

“Well, I died and that bird was sitting by that slice of chocolate cake with another 2 bird friends, Weld. The birds were sitting there chirping, but I died”

Trying to write down her dream a very curious Sandy was intrigued

“How can I die in my dream and see 3 birds chirping? It doesn’t make any sense Weld”

Sandy said as she tried to wipe her eyes so she could see clearer

“I’m not sure Sandy but its 5am, go back to sleep and when you wake up to have your coffee, I’m sure the bird will come back to visit you like all the other days and maybe the bird will have 2 other bird friends visit too”

Weld said as he was searching for his work clothes with his phone light on.

“Hmmm I hope so, but I wonder what it means” Sandy said as she sat writing in her diary

“Would you like a coffee now love?” Asked Weld

“Hmmm, I think I will get up and find my book about dreams” The curious Sandy responded.

Sandy loved learning about dreams and all the stuff not many people believe in.

She loved to learn about the ‘why’s’ of the world and was the biggest believer in ‘everything happens for a reason’.

Sandy always researched the most random things such as ‘why do birds do flips? Or what do number plates mean’. Optimistic Sandy had a gorgeous outlook on the ‘how comes’ of the world which made her and Weld the most chalk and cheese couple but the perfect missing piece from each other’s puzzle you ever did see.

Death by a slice of chocolate cake in a dream, such a beautiful adventure for Sandy to travel.

I hope she finds her wonderful answers and her dreams come to life like she openly wishes.
