Becoming Thankful

Gratitude with Money

This is the time of year when everyone likes to share what they are thankful for.

If you haven’t taken the time to think deeply about what you are grateful for, now is the perfect time!

Today we are going to be talking about becoming thankful with money.

On Thanksgiving, many people are grateful for certain things that they can buy on Black Friday – maybe that large screen TV or a new outfit they’ve been wanting.

Now let’s go one step deeper: you can be grateful for the item, but you can also be grateful that you have the ability to purchase the item.

If you have money in the bank or a credit card that is allowing you to buy something, you should be thankful!

Are you employed and bringing in a paycheck that allows you to make purchases? This is definitely something to be grateful for!

Are you healthy enough to walk into the store to make a purchase? You should be grateful for your well-being and ability to walk on your own!

Do you have a family you can share a meal with on Thanksgiving? Not everyone has this, and it's not something to be taken for granted.

Now let’s think big picture and look at the grand scheme of things. Considering the law of attraction, no matter what your religion, you probably notice that when you are grateful for what you have, the universe seems to give you more. When you are ungrateful and always wishing for what you don't have, then you will perpetually be stuck wishing for the next thing, and never have enough! One of these mindsets definitely sounds better than the other.

We can also look at Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This is a pyramid of the basic needs for most individuals.

On the base of the pyramid we have food, water and shelter. These are key to simple survival. If you have these, you should be very happy!

Next up on the pyramid is safety and security. Do you feel safe where you live or where you work? Be thankful!

Going up another level is Relationships and Friendships. While maybe not key to survival, these are still basic human needs and you should be grateful for good relationships in your life. In fact, this might be the perfect time to let special people know you much you appreciate them. You’d be happy to know that others appreciate you, so don’t be afraid to share with those close to you!

Next up we see the needs for prestige, belonging and accomplishment. Maybe you have recently completed an item from your bucket list or done something you are incredibly proud of. Or maybe you have taken the first step towards one of these. Either way, you can be grateful!

And finally, at the very top of the pyramid is your full potential. This is what you are continually aiming for, and you can be thankful for every success along the way!

As you go through your life journey, you might have things you are currently grateful for, and then things that you are working towards that you hope to be grateful for in the future. Never stop working to visualize your goals, chase them down, and then be thankful when you accomplish them.

The way you express your gratitude might be different for every person. For some it might mean journaling, blogging, or even creating a podcast. For others it might mean meditation or talking to someone directly.

Whatever you are grateful for, make sure you are taking the time to express your gratitude in the right way for you
