Start your day the right way

How much have you got to do today? My guess is probably a lot.

With everyone trying to balance child care and working from home where it’s possible our lives have all got a little more complicated during this coronavirus outbreak.

However, there are some mindful ways that you can start your day to help you have a better and more productive day.

If you can I would suggest setting aside thirty minutes every morning. This is your time. Whether you get up half an hour earlier than the rest of the house our schedule this in your diary we all need to be focusing on some extra self care during this time.

Let’s look at some mindful things you can do to crate a mindful morning routine that will help you thrive.

1: Drink a glass of water – First thing upon waking grab yourself a glass of water and drink the whole thing. This helps to wake up your body, refreshing and hydrating it after your slumber. I tend to have a glass of water on my bedside cabinet over night too.

2: Spend 10 minutes reading something positive – Starting the day with positive thoughts helps you stay positive throughout the day. This could be books, articles, quotes. As long as it’s positive it good.

3: Visualisation – Spend five minutes visualising a positive day ahead of you. Visualise eating good healthy food, visualise getting your work done, spending time with your family etc.

4: Of you only do one activity in the morning let it be a gratitude practice. Sit down and write down three things that you are grateful for during this time. It might be things like not having to commute to work, having extra time with family, enjoying a slower-paced life. There are so many things we can be grateful for during this period of unrest.

5: Meditate – I personally meditate for at least ten minutes every morning. Set a timer for ten minutes and then simply sit concentrating on your breath for that period. As thoughts pop up as they inevitably will just acknowledge them and bring yourself back to your breath. It takes time but training your brain this way will help lower cortisol which has a negative affect on your immune system.

6: Get some exercise. This might just be five minutes stretching your muscles, running on the spot or doing a little toga in front of the tv. However and whatever you can do it’s better than staying stagnant. Our bodies need movement to stay healthy and happy. So do what you can to get your body moving especially after being still in bed for hours.

7: Finally have a good filling breakfast. If your hungry you can’t think properly and our bodies don’t have the necessary energy to work as they should. This is really important during a time when we need our bodies to be in tip-top condition.

All of the above ideas put together in whichever order can help you to build a positive and mindful morning routine which is going to help you stay focused, productive and positive throughout the day.

If you can and if it’s possible for you to try to get out for some fresh air every few hours. Especially if you are sat in front of a computer or laptop for work. If you don’t have a garden then maybe a walk around the block. Obviously practising social distancing during these periods. If however, this isn't possible then take a ten-minute break and open a window to get some fresh air on your face and give your eyes a rest.

I hope these tips help you as we try and balance a more isolated life in the weeks ahead.
