Today, I wanted to give you a dose of inspiration and motivation by presenting you with eight powerful ways to improve your self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem is essential if you want to be happy, healthy and successful in life; loving and respecting yourself is necessary.

As a female entrepreneur, mother and all-around workaholic, I often neglect my emotional, spiritual and mental wellbeing. The tips I am going to outline in this blog post will help you lift your spirits, and help to change the way you think about yourself.

Self-esteem is defined as confidence in one’s own self-worth and abilities. When your self-esteem is healthy, you carry yourself with pride and fearlessness. However, when your self-esteem is low, you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to others and focusing on every negative aspect of your life, instead of paying attention to the positive things.

With high self-esteem comes a positive outlook on life, a more youthful appearance, and an overall healthier and happier you. Try these eight powerful tips to improve your self-esteem and confidence.

Keep a Self Appreciation Journal

Keeping a self-appreciation journal can boost your self-esteem immensely. You can drastically change the way you feel about yourself by changing the way you talk to yourself. An appreciation journal provides you with a specific space to write down positive things about yourself. It provides you with the opportunity to tell yourself how special you are.

Try doing a 30-day appreciation journal challenge. For the next 30 days, write down positive things about yourself. Write down what you like about yourself, what you feel grateful for, write down at least one thing you are good at, and at least one positive aspect of your life. Use the following questions as a guide to facilitate your appreciation journaling experience:

What do you like about yourself?

What are you good at?

How do people perceive you?

What do you like about your appearance?

What did you do to help somebody today?

What is your super talent?

What are you grateful for?

Write in your journal every day, learn to answer the questions out loud. Immerse yourself in positive self-talk, and transform the way you perceive yourself.

Try Something New

If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think.” — T.Harv Eker

Trying something new can rapidly increase self-esteem, especially if taking part in new activities makes you feel apprehensive. Actually taking action and trying something that scares you can be liberating. Challenging yourself to face a fear and jump outside of your comfort zone can create new confidence and belief in your abilities and self-worth.

Set a Goal and Achieve it

“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible”. — Tony Robbins

Set a goal for yourself, take the necessary steps to achieve that goal, and watch your self-esteem soar. According to the Goodtherapy.org website, setting realistic goals and working hard to achieve them can improve the relationship you have with yourself. It can also help to change the way you think about yourself, and build confidence in your own abilities.

It is necessary, however, for the goals to be S.M.A.R.T goals, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. Setting vague, unmeasurable goals sets you up for failure from the get-go. Therefore, it is vital that you state your intention and be very specific about it. Instead of saying I want to run a few times a week. State that you want to run 3 times a week for 20 minutes, for one month. This is a short-term goal, but it is a realistic short-term goal.

Once you have achieved that goal, set another goal to push yourself even further towards a greater goal. Remember to write your goals down, writing them down breathes life into them. It takes them from an intangible idea to an attainable goal.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are” — Marilyn Monroe

Comparing yourself to others is a waste of energy and time. The more you compare yourself to others, the less you concentrate on the unique, interesting person you are. So, instead of making unnecessary comparisons, home in on all the amazing qualities that you have, and remember that there is no one else in the world with the same fingerprint as you.

Take Care of Yourself

Take care of yourself, appreciate yourself and inject love and abundance into your life. Taking care of yourself should include, exercise, eating healthy, plenty of water and fresh air. It should also include, treating yourself with kindness, love and appreciation. Try and exercise at least 3 times a week, stretch every day, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and consume at least 8 large glasses of water daily. Remember your appreciation journal? Ensure that you write in it every day, tell yourself how amazing you are daily!

Read

Read positive content such as books, blog posts and articles. Try to avoid negative content that might result in you questioning your self-worth. Reduce the amount of television you watch, and focus more on reading positive content.

An excellent example of positive literature, is the classic self-help book, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. In this book, you will learn how to switch your focus from negative to positive. Peale teaches you how to eliminate negative thinking, and provides you with the steps to begin directing your thoughts towards positivity, instead of negativity. Another useful book to consider is, Awaken The Giant Within by Tony Robbins. The book teaches you how to shift your belief system in order to boost your self-esteem, and release the greatness within you.

Meditate

Meditation can drastically boost your self-esteem because it allows you to set your intention and empty your mind of any negative hindrances. The Dalai Lama had a meeting with a group of Western therapists. He asked them what is the most common complaint their patients come to them with. They all stated low self-esteem. He responded by saying that low self-esteem rarely exists in Tibet, as the culture and environment do not enable, or encourage feelings of low self-worth.

One of the methods he uses every morning is a method called “shaping motivation”. Meditating on his intentions for the day. Focusing on spreading love, kindness and positivity to anyone he comes into contact with, as well as himself. This act of spreading love and kindness boosts self-esteem because instead of focusing on your flaws, you are focusing on becoming a beacon of love, thus elevating your self-worth and self-esteem.

Help Someone

Offering someone a helping hand can aid in building self-confidence. Because when you decide to help someone in need, you shift the focus away from yourself. You inject energy into creating a more loving environment for someone else. Therefore, you are releasing positive energy into the universe. When you release positive energy into the universe, you surround yourself with that energy. You boost your self-esteem by seeing lives improve because of your kind, positive actions.
