We live in challenging times. Between global crises and the general breakneck pace of contemporary life, there's enough to stress anyone out, even if they don't have to hold down a full time job on top of it. Most of us, however, still have to work in addition to just dealing with living in a rapidly changing world. Needing to be productive every day only serves to compound the stresses already surrounding us. Fortunately, there are several basic steps detailed below that anyone can take in order to better cope with stressful days. These may seem like deceptively obvious ideas, but in truth there are a few simple and easy to practice methods of shoring up your physical and mental health in order to better tackle the world's challenges.

Eat the Right Food

Having a good diet is paramount to making your day better. Even so, the diet of many Americans is lacking in essential nutrients which are vital to keeping energy high. Adding more leafy green vegetables is an excellent first step. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to be mood-boosters as well as aiding in the improvement of cardiovascular health. In addition, there are certain foods which have been touted as superfoods, a term commonly used to describe foods with an extremely high nutrient density (such as blueberries). If you don't find those foods appetizing, there's always the option of taking a superfood powder as a dietary supplement. What happens to our bodies affects our mental health as well. The mind-gut connection is becoming more well documented all the time, and even people who don't put much thought into their physical well being are taking steps (such as consuming probiotics) so that they can get healthy bodies in order to have healthy minds.

Catch up on Your Sleep

Study upon study has shown that sleep is one area of our daily routine that has cascading effects upon the rest of our lives. 7 to 9 hours of sleep is optimum for adults and helps the brain to process emotional information better. While you're asleep, your brain processes thoughts and memories. In essence, the brain is acting overnight to help you deal with and recover from emotional stresses accumulated during the day. This is especially true of sleep which includes the stage called REM (rapid eye movement). Try taking action to increase the quality of your sleep by shutting off electronic devices at least an hour before you go to bed. Another good idea is making certain that your bedroom is a sanctuary reserved for sleep only. Don't forget to take a walk outdoors either; getting natural sunlight in the morning is a great way to realign your body's natural sleep rhythms.

Focus on the Future

How we see the world affects how we interface with it. When you expect better, you tend to do better. Optimists often have better heart health, a longer lifespan and a stronger immune function than pessimists. This phenomenon has been confirmed by science repeatedly, yet is one of the most difficult plans to put into practice. The fact that negative life experiences make people pessimistic which in turn causes them to have worse health is quite a vicious cycle. It is, however, a cycle that can be broken. Learning to focus on the good in life is a skill that can be mastered by anyone. Good things are happening in the world, and although it might take effort to see them sometimes, that effort is often rewarded with visible improvements in your own life. Start that snowball effect!

The world can feel overwhelming. It's natural to feel like accepting malaise is normal; that being said, it's not a good idea and it's certainly not a necessary fate. The things that hold us back from getting through our days with joy are simple to understand and their solutions are correspondingly simple. By adding just a few new practices to your regimen of self-care, you can make it through whatever challenges the world sends your way.
