How can you learn to be a happy person and live a happy life? Here are 10 tips to help you do that.

Do you often think, “All I want is to be happy? Surely, that’s not too much to ask for?” Every person does indeed deserve happiness and what is more, happiness is contagious.

We owe it ourselves to work on our own happiness and we owe it to society as well. Our own happiness will help and inspire others to find happiness. The more happy people there are the more people will find happiness.

If we’re unhappy then we’re likely making others unhappy as well (even if unintentionally) and it’s unlikely that we’re doing much to contribute to the happiness of others.

Are you happy? Can you honestly say that you’re content at all times? Or, could it be that you are on an emotional roller coaster — happy when things go according to your way; and sad, frustrated or mad when they’re not?

How can you learn how to always be happy? Happiness is an internal state of contentment and it must be unconditional. Here are some steps you can take to begin learning how to make yourself happy.

1. Choose to be happy

To be happy is relatively easy just decide to be a happy person. The choice is simple really, choose to be happy. You can accomplish this step by first determining that you want to be happy.

Part of being happy is having a desire to be happy. Once you have committed yourself to the course of finding happiness for yourself then you must rid yourself of the notion that happiness is luck or based on possessions or persons. No possessions and no person can make you happy.

Happiness comes from within. Once you make the choice to be happy your world will change to accommodate what it is you want and you will find being a happy person easier to do than you first thought!

There really is no secret to being happy, you just have to make up your mind to be and you will be. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

“Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

It’s easy to get caught in the trap of thinking that if you could just find the right person, they’d arrive with a box of happiness attached to their hip. But all this does is convince you that happiness is something to be found outside of yourself.

If you think it is someone else’s responsibility to make you happy, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever find happiness. Thinking he should, she should, they should make you happy puts your life in a shaky position because when other people aren’t making you happy, you’ll be miserable.

As Law of Attraction teachers, Abraham-Hicks say, “Stop giving other people the responsibility for the way you feel, it's the only place you're ever going to find freedom.”

“Stop giving other people the responsibility for the way you feel, it's the only place you're ever going to find freedom.”

Remember that no one else is responsible for making you happy! Your happiness lies in your hands, not in anyone else’s. So decide today that you are the best person to make you happy and find ways to do that.

2. Do the things you love

If you’re unhappy, you may want to reflect on when you were last truly happy. Work out the reasons why and see whether the things you did then can bring you happiness again now.

Think about what currently makes you happy and spend time doing those things more and more. Decide today to stop chasing happiness, and instead choose three things that you love to do, that contribute to your feeling of well-being and satisfaction.

Schedule time for them, every day if possible, or every week, at least. It doesn’t have to be for a long time — just 10 minutes a day can help you create the happiness that you’re looking for.

3. Laughter is the best medicine

A great way to be happy? Laugh! Laughter has an amazing effect on the body, mind and spirit, raising us up when we feel down. Laughter builds immunity and promotes good health.

Just stop for a minute and remember a really funny incident. It doesn’t matter how long ago it happened, just recall it now and see what you saw, hear what you heard and feel what you were feeling.

It should bring back the feeling inside of you of being happy. Now, whenever you are down just recall that memory.

4. Remember everything is temporary

Know that the only thing in life that will always remain the same is change, and in our life, we have the power to make the necessary changes if we want to.

Even if we find ourselves in an unbearable situation we can always find solace in the knowledge that it too will change.

5. Cultivate good friendships

Good friendships and relationships can help you become a happier person. Join online communities, social networks and networking groups and start socializing.

Express your feelings, affections, friendship and passion to people around you. They will most likely reciprocate your actions.

6. Live and let live

People are different, so accept them for who and what they are. Avoid clashes, constant arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments.

If arguments seem unavoidable, do your best to make an effort to understand the situation, see it from your point of view, and then their point of view.

Then see if you can become an outside observer looking at the two of you disagreeing and see it from that point of view. What difference does that make for you?

7. Be grateful

Being grateful is a great attitude. We have so much to be thankful for. Thank the taxi driver for bringing you home safely, thank the cook for a wonderful dinner and thank the person who cleans your windows.

Avoid exposure to negative news and negative people. Focus on happy thoughts and appreciate all the good things in your life.

8. Express your feelings

Avoid holding on to anger or frustrations, this is bad for your health. Instead, find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause injury or harm to anyone.

I love thumping my pillow or screaming really loud (into my pillow or somewhere secluded!). For some, the best medicine for expressing your feelings is writing in a diary, but for others, it can help to chat with a counsellor online.

9. Take up a hobby

Learning is a joyful exercise. Try and learn something new every day. Learning also makes us expand and broaden our horizons, and could also open us to new opportunities.

Gardening is a wonderful and relaxing hobby enjoyed by many all over the world. People who enjoy gardening often feel a deep-rooted sense of calm and tranquillity, and they also forge a stronger connection with nature.

10. Learn how to be happy alone

Can you learn how to be happy alone without being lonely? Yes, you can learn how to live alone happily once you befriend yourself and learn how to be a good companion to yourself.

Remember, you deserve a happy life and you can lead a happy life. Focus on choosing to be happy, no matter what happens in your life, and you will be happy.
