You’ve probably heard people talk about how you should have at least 6 to 8 cups of water in a day. You may find yourself reaching for a bottle of water after an intense workout or when your mouth gets dry. Water helps quench thirst and keeps us hydrated, but its benefits extend far beyond that. Take a look at the many health benefits of water that may just get you to drink more of it on a daily basis.

Water removes waste and toxins from your body

Drinking plenty of water helps your kidneys remove waste from the bloodstream and get rid of toxins in the body through perspiration, defecation, or urination. It is also responsible for filtration of the blood vessels running to your kidneys which helps keep them open. Lack of water in the body can make getting rid of waste material difficult and lead to constipation and even kidney stones.

It’s needed for optimal brain functioning

Water constitutes 75% of the brain so a lack of it can lead to feeling foggy-headed, experiencing confusion, fatigue, weakness, and problems with memory and attention. Adequate water intake prevents dehydration and maintains the level of electrolytes in the brain. This improves concentration, memory, emotions, mood, and can even relieve headaches.

It protects joints, tissues, and spinal cord

Water helps to keep tissues and other body parts moist, thereby lubricating them and providing them with adequate support and protection. Such cushioning can protect you from painful conditions like arthritis. It also keeps the eyes, nose, and mouth moist, protecting them from damage or friction.

Drinking more water will help your digestion

Water ensures that things move smoothly in your gastrointestinal tract. It allows for waste particles to be dissolved easily and nutrients to be broken down. It helps ensure regularity of stool movements and avoids constipation. It also makes the digestion of soluble fibre a lot easier in your body.

It can help with weight loss

Drinking water can aid in your weight loss efforts in multiple ways. It can fill you up faster without the calories, thereby suppressing your appetite and causing you to eat lesser during the meal. It also prevents the retention of fluids in the body as your body will be getting enough. Besides this, drinking water before a meal can actually raise your metabolism by 24% to 30% for up to 1.5 hours afterwards. This makes losing weight a lot easier.

It regulates body temperature

Drinking adequate amounts of water will help you regulate your body temperature better through sweating. When you’re in a hot environment or doing some physical activity, water loss occurs through sweating. While this keeps your body cool, your temperature will rise if you don’t drink enough water. A dehydrated body will lose more plasma and electrolytes, so it’s crucial to drink water to maintain optimal body temperature.

It boosts energy levels

Daily water intake can increase your metabolism by up to 30% which will give you more energy to carry out the tasks for the rest of the day. Many people don't do well because they don't feel well. Water gives you the means to not just do what you need to, but also have the energy to do it.

You can improve your physical performance

When you work out, you will end up losing a lot of water through sweating. Staying hydrated under such conditions is necessary to improve physical performance as water is crucial for building strength, endurance, and power. This is necessary especially in the case of high intensity work outs. Without enough water, you may suffer from decreased blood pressure, hyperthermia, seizures, and in extreme situations this may be fatal.

It transports oxygen and nutrients

Water is necessary for absorbing the vitamins, nutrients, and minerals in your food and transporting nutrients as well as oxygen throughout your body. A healthier body can fight off pathogens more effectively and protect you from various illnesses.
