Vaccinations are Effective

The curious case of the UK Chief Science Advisor

Vaccines are a marvel of modern medical science. Imagine the state of the world if it weren’t for vaccines? Vaccines have dealt a death blow to just about anything they come up against.

With Covid being so front and center of the world now, the vaccines being rolled out had all of our hope riding on them. These will finally get us back to something resembling normal.

We proudly line up to protect those around us by getting the jab. It’s the responsible and right thing to do. My mother-in-law lives with us and she has a compromised immune system, so she was one of the first here in Australia to receive the vaccine. She was tired for about five days after the first jab and had a similar reaction to the second jab.

She didn’t have any other side effects, so that was very positive. My colleagues at work have all had their vaccines and one of my colleagues has a compromised immune system. He also had no side effects once again a very positive outcome.

Constantly on the news here, they remind us about getting our vaccines, and this is important, so that we can prevent ourselves from serious illness if we contracted the virus.

I was so happy that vaccines were working so well, and then all at once my optimistic fervour for the vaccines came crashing down. It wasn’t anything happening here in Australia and I am happy that my parents and my mother-in-law got vaccinated. My sister has to wait as she had Covid and recovered so they said she needs to wait another 9 months and they will reassess.

Then it happened. A press conference crushed my optimistic enthusiasm. Just when I thought we had defeated or were at least getting the better of the virus, vaccines to the rescue once again like always!

The Chief Medical advisor to the UK government said that 60% of people in hospital with Covid are double vaccinated people. Once again I was back in a state of confusion. How could this be? Vaccinated people just don’t end up in hospital.

He later corrected himself and I quote from Reuters.

“LONDON, July 19 (Reuters) — Britain’s Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance said that 60% of people being admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, correcting an earlier statement he made on Monday.”

The announcement was like eating Chinese sweet and sour take away. I was happy and sad, all at once about this announcement, because it still means that 40% of the people in hospital with Covid are double vaccinated.

Why so many double vaccinated people in the hospital? The vaccine stops the hospitalisation of people. That is what I hear continually in our media. I understand we can all still get Covid even if we get fully vaccinated, but it should be nothing more than a mild cold or something. This was very troubling to me.

This one press conference just highlighted how precious life is, how fragile life is, and that we all need to care for each other.

With so many conspiracy theories and negativity online, around vaccinations, the British Chief Science Advisor just added fuel to the conspiracy theorists fire. We really don’t need more conspiracy theories but that is what these kinds of announcements produce.

I wish we could live in a world where truth reigned supreme. A world where everyone in public office had to come clean about the actual issues so that we can all work together to find better solutions. Unfortunately, the feeling I get is that people prefer to tell comfortable lies, rather than face uncomfortable truths.

Final thoughts

I walk into the future with humility and trepidation, realising that everything that we think we control, we actually have little control over. I am so grateful to all the medical and scientific minds that work tirelessly to keep us safe. The frontline workers, particularly the health staff that risk their health every day, are the greatest heroes. I applaud them and wish they could get paid more for what they do. They certainly don’t get paid enough.
