The women's sexual disorder- the friable cervix
Symptoms of friable cervix in women's sexual disorder
When a woman’s cervix becomes irritated, the condition is known as a friable cervix. The cervix is the opening of the uterus from the vagina. A friable cervix is usually more sensitive and might be inflamed, torn, and bleeding. The term ‘friable’ means the damaged, torn, sloughed tissue that bleeds more if touched or had sexual intercourse. A friable cervix is usually considered to be a symptom of any underlying disease that needs to be treated.
In this article, you will read more about the friable cervix, its symptoms, its causes, its diagnosis, and prevention.
Symptoms of a friable cervix
The symptoms of a friable cervix can vary from woman to woman. The symptoms may differ with respect to its cause. The most common or prevalent symptoms of a friable cervix are written below:
● Irritation or pain in the vagina
● Stinging or burning in the vagina
● Abnormal patterns of bleeding after sex or between menstrual cycle
● Pain, stinging, or discomfort during sex
● Abnormal discharge from the vagina
All the above symptoms are not only the symptoms of a friable cervix, but a number of other sexual health conditions may cause these. Women may face other symptoms than this, depending upon the cause of a friable cervix.
It is not always compulsory that a woman experiences these symptoms of a friable cervix. Sometimes, it is possible that a woman might be suffering from the condition of a friable cervix without having any noticeable symptoms. This means that it is possible that a friable cervix goes unnoticeable.
Causes of a friable cervix
A friable cervix or a sensitive cervix can be caused due to several reasons. The typical causes of the friable cervix are listed such as the following:
Cervical ectropion
One of the causes of a friable cervix is cervical ectropion. Cervical ectropion is benign and occurs when the glandular cells inside the cervical canal spread towards the outside. The condition is marked by vaginal discharge, pain, and bleeding during intercourse.
Cervical polyps
The formation of small bodies on the cervix is known as cervical polyps. This is benign and non-cancerous. Cervical polyps cause irregular bleeding between the menstrual cycle or after sex.
Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)
The occurrence of abnormal changes such as the abnormal growth of cells in the cervix is known as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. It can cause cancer if left untreated for a long time. It usually goes unnoticed as it does not have any particular symptoms.
Cervicitis
The condition that involves inflammation of the cervix is known as cervicitis. Cervicitis can be caused due to a number of infections that include bacterial vaginosis, chlamydia, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, etc.
Other potential causes of a friable cervix include:
Allergies or irritation
An allergy or physical irritation may cause a friable cervix. For example, the use of products like latex condoms, spermicides, contraceptive devices, etc., can cause an allergy or develop irritation which may result in a friable cervix.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STI’s)
The inflammation of the cervix whether infectious or non-infectious, known as cervicitis, is caused by sexually transmitted diseases, as mentioned above. Sexually transmitted diseases include chlamydia, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, gonorrhea, etc. The symptoms of a friable cervix caused due to the STI’s may include abnormal discharge, burning sensation while peeing, abnormal bleeding, pain, stinging, sores, discomfort during sex, pain during sex, etc. But there are some sexually transmitted diseases that generally do not have any symptoms.
Cervical cancer
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that is caused by sexual contact between people. This virus can cause cervical cancer in women. It is a type of cancer in which the cells in the cervix are affected. In the initial stages, cervical cancer does not show any noticeable symptoms except the vaginal discharge or vaginal bleeding between the menstrual cycle or after having sex.
Vaginal atrophy
A friable cervix may be caused due to vaginal atrophy. Vaginal atrophy is a women’s sexual health condition in which the lining of the vagina starts to get thin and wrinkles. This causes the vagina to become narrower and smaller resulting in painful intercourse. Vaginal atrophy may cause problems such as urine incontinence, urinary tract infections, etc. The cause of vaginal atrophy is usually considered as the hormonal imbalance. The hormonal imbalance is the result of the fluctuation of hormones causing the hormonal levels to become very high or very low.
Pregnancy
Another cause of a friable cervix can be pregnancy. The hormones produced during pregnancy can cause the cervix to become much sensitive. It happens because the supply of blood to the tissues that are surrounding the cervix gets increased.
Diagnosis of a friable cervix
A friable cervix may be diagnosed using the following techniques by your doctor:
● Tests checking for sexually transmitted diseases (STI’s)
● Pap test
● Biopsy
● Colposcopy
● Pelvic exam
Prevention of a friable cervix
You can reduce the risk of developing the conditions that may cause a friable cervix. The methods to prevent yourself from having this condition include:
● Vaccination against HPV
● Get regular cervical screening
● Use of protection during sex
● Get regularly tested against the development of STI’s
● Get treatment for the underlying diseases that caused a friable cervix
