When it comes to eating healthy foods most people have an idea in their head as to what that is. Just about everyone is going to consider spinach a healthy food and cookies a not so healthy food. What about something like pasta? Some people would say that pasta is not a healthy food; others would say that it is, and some would say it depends on if it is whole-wheat pasta.

To Start, What Is the Healthy Food Definition?

Before we get too deep into talking about eating healthy and how it can help you lead a better lifestyle, it’s important for you to know the healthy food definition. Many people are under the impression that everything that has the word “healthy” on it is good for them to eat, which is not always the case.

Generally speaking, healthy food is anything that is:

  • Low in fat
  • Low in saturated fat
  • Low in cholesterol
  • Low in sodium

Healthy food is also anything that has at least 10% of the vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, protein, fiber, and iron that your body needs.

What Does Healthy Eating Look Like?

Now that you know the healthy food definition, it’s time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture as far as healthy eating is concerned.

The thing that makes it hard to determine if a food is healthy is that there is no indicator of what makes a food healthy. Is it the total number of calories in the food? What about grams of sugar or amount of vitamins and nutrients? It really just comes down to the opinion of the individual and what they believe is or isn't healthy. Many people who are trying to lose weight will base their diet off of what they think is healthy and only eat those kinds of foods. It is still very possible to overeat those "healthy" foods and gain weight, or at the very least not lose the amount that you wanted to, the main thing is to stay accountable with your total number of calories that you are consuming and you will be fine. If you eat a cookie, that's fine as long as you still stay within your given number of calories. You can make up for it if necessary by eating less of something else or exercising more.

Healthy eating involves taking all of the different healthy foods that are out there and mixing and matching them so that you’re giving your body all the nutrients that it needs. It also involves getting the correct portions of these foods so that you can keep yourself at a healthy weight and keep your entire system humming along.

List Of Healthy Foods To Eat :

Finding a list of healthy foods to eat is not as easy you would think. There are a lot of amazing foods in the world that can increase your well being and make you look amazing. It is just about finding them.

So here are my top 5 healthy and tasty foods :

  • Avocados. They may not be to everyone's taste, but they are full of vitamins (B, E, K), minerals, fiber and healthy fat.
  • Salmon. Salmon is full of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins (D, A and B) and minerals like Selenium, Zinc, Phosphorus, Calcium and Iron.
  • Dark chocolate. Big surprise! Apart from the positive effects on your mood, dark chocolate (high-cacao content) also has positive effects on your heart, circulatory system, brain function and skin. Of course you should eat it in moderation (max. a 1.6-ounce a day).
  • Almonds. Almonds contain about 50% oils (mostly omega-9 fatty acids that are good for your brain). They are also rich in vitamin E, fiber and essential minerals.
  • Blueberries. They taste good and are full of antioxidants and fiber.

You may have noticed most of the foods on my list are rich in fat. But it is monounsaturated fat, the "good" fat, which can even lower LDL cholesterol in your body. The good fat doesn't really make you fat. Carbohydrates, especially too much sugar does.

The benefits of eating healthy food include living a longer life, feeling happier, gaining vitality, weight loss, and a healthy appearance. Processed food decrease the quality of our lives, so eating healthy foods means we can better fight diseases and live longer. When it comes to happiness, studies have shown that eating healthy foods is an excellent natural antidepressant.

Finaly, At this point, you know the healthy food definition. You know what healthy eating is all about. And you know some of the foods that you should be eating to make yourself healthier.
