What is actually coenzyme Q10?

It is a substance produced naturally by our body, which helps us to transform the food we eat into energy. It is found in almost every cell in the body and is a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidant? Yes, the one that "fights" with particles in the body is known as free radicals, responsible for cell degradation. CoQ10 neutralizes the harmful effect of free radicals and can reduce or even prevent the damage caused by them.

Researchers believe that free radicals are responsible for both the aging process and a number of health problems such as heart or cancer. In this regard, according to studies, coenzyme Q10 is thought to be an adjunct in the treatment of heart disease, due to its ability to improve energy production at the cellular level and prevent blood clots.

The problem is that, with age, one's own production of Q10 decreases, and deficiencies begin to appear: at the nutritional level, oxidative stress, skin aging…

These deficiencies can be controlled with a diet rich in coenzyme Q10 - soybean oil, hazelnuts, oranges, strawberries, broccoli, and cauliflower, or with Q10-based dietary supplements.

The role of coenzyme Q10 in the body

Necessary in the development and proper functioning of all living cells, coenzyme Q10 is produced naturally by the body. There are no less than 10 types of coenzyme Q, but only Q10 is in the structure of human cells.

However, the human body produces a sufficient amount of coenzyme Q10 only until the age of 30. After this age, CoQ10 production decreases progressively.

The benefits of coenzyme Q10 for the body

Among the benefits of coenzyme Q10 are the support of the immune system and the cardiovascular system, the anti-aging role, or the regulation of blood sugar levels. Find out below what the main benefits of coenzyme Q10 are.

Improving heart health, regulating blood sugar, preventing and treating cancer, reducing the frequency of migraines - are some of the benefits of consuming Q10.

It could also reduce oxidative damage leading to muscle fatigue, skin damage, and brain and lung disease.

As Q10 production decreases with age, adults should be more careful and receptive to diets rich in this coenzyme, which has only health benefits.

Coenzyme Q10 is a truly miraculous substance that every cell of our body needs in order to continue to enjoy a maximum level of energy and a strong heart!

Food sources of CoQ10

While you can easily take Q10 as a dietary supplement, it can also be found in some foods such as:

Meat and animal organs: pork, beef, and chicken, heart, liver, and kidneys

Fatty fish: trout, herring, mackerel, and sardines

Vegetables and fruits: spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, oranges, and strawberries

legumes: soy, lentils, and peanuts

Nuts and seeds: sesame and pistachio seeds

Oils: soybean oil and canola

In general, coenzyme Q10 is available in three types of food: fish, animal organs (including liver, kidney, and heart) and whole-grain germs, spinach, and broccoli. The most concentrated sources of coenzyme Q - such as heart or kidney - contain about 2-3 milligrams of coenzyme Q per 100 grams of heart or kidney. Cereal germs contain less coenzyme Q10, but also contain vitamin E in amounts of 5-10 IU per 100gr, and vitamin E works with coenzyme Q in the body.

Coenzyme Q10 has attracted some interest in the scientific community, as older people and people with medical conditions have generally had lower levels of CoQ10. As cancer has also become prevalent among the elderly and the risk of cancer has increased with age, it has led to various studies to assess what effects this enzyme can really have on the body.

Coenzyme Q10 has many benefits for the body, supporting the immune system, heart, or proper brain function. Your doctor may recommend a daily dose of coenzyme Q10, depending on the specific needs of your body.
