How Trauma Can Affect Our Physical Health

My trauma left me with a disease.

How Trauma Can Affect Our Physical Health

I have decided to share my story because I want to bring awareness to the negative effects that trauma can have on our physical health.

I had my first seizure when I was 16. It wasn’t like your textbook seizure. I didn’t fall to the ground and start foaming at the mouth. The best way I can describe it to you would be that it looked like a shiver... but a massive shiver, ending in a brief loss of consciousness. I would get them in the shower, slipping and almost breaking my head open. Sitting on a chair, and next thing you know I’m on the ground, but for only a few seconds. Then I would regain consciousness. My parents immediately took me to a neurologist who, after sitting with me for no more than 15 minutes and hearing my symptoms, diagnosed me with Juvenile Epilepsy. Juvenile Epilepsy is generalized epileptic syndrome characterized by myoclonic jerks, generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCSs), and sometimes absence seizures.

“It’s the bread and butter of my type of work,” she said. Then came all the testing and the suspension of my license. Funny thing was those tests couldn’t find much. They couldn’t establish any abnormal pattern of brain waves. They told us there was a “slight” abnormality in my brain wave function. There was also no genetic tie in my family that could have passed me a gene such as this. Yet, they still wanted to put me on all these medications (for the rest of my life) that had ridiculous side effects, and I would have to be on these meds for six to eight months before I could get my license back.

My mom encouraged me to take the holistic and homeopathic route to treat my epilepsy. The reason that the doctors were unable to find much through all the testing was because my epilepsy was a result of trauma that I encountered in my younger years. It was the way my mind and body reacted to a series of traumatizing events. Crazy, right?

Through years of extensive alternative therapies, I have learned to confront, accept, and most importantly, forgive all of the bad stuff that happened to me. My seizures got better and better, became smaller and smaller. I understood that these so-called seizures were triggered by two main components: Stress and emotions. My therapies taught me the correct way to deal with those two things, and this is how I have lived my life ever since. I have found and treated the root cause of my disease.

It has been 10 years since these seizures started and I am proud to say that I rarely have one. Holistic medicine saved my life.

How does it work?
