Usually, the easiest way to get rid of weight loss is to add — not remove. Start exercising (even a daily walk will do); add healthy fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; drink plenty of water… Eventually, by starting these healthy habits, you will start to replace things that are less than what you used to do and eat. However, there is only one drink to consider cutting into your diet as soon as you commit to weight loss because it is the most closely related weight gain in America: soda.

According to a study published in BMC Public Health magazine, 20% of the total calories you consume per day come entirely from beverages. For the average person who eats 2,000 calories a day, that is 400 calories added to your diet from drinks alone. So what really makes up those 400 calories? A BMC study found that it was a combination of coffee and tea (and supplements), energy drinks, fruit juice and beverages, milk, and alcohol. But these are high-energy drinks compared to the beverage that binds to provide the most calories in your diet: soda.

Stubborn tummy fat can be very hard to shift. And it can also increase your risk of developing serious Covid by as much as 75 percent, according to a new study that has resulted in scientists calling for Covid patients with abdominal fat to be closely monitored.

The Italian researchers found that carrying extra fat around the stomach puts Covid patients at greater risk of developing serious complications, compared to overall body fat, which didn’t appear to worsen the severity of the virus. And, it's not just a Covid issue: fat deposits around the middle have previously been linked to serious health issues, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease.

However, due to our often sedentary lifestyles and stressful jobs, medicated with alcohol and biscuits, belly fat can easily build up.

And, with pubs and restaurants finally, open again indoors after lockdown restrictions were eased again on May 17, there's even more temptation to let loose when meeting up with friends.

Research has found that soda provides between 35 and 141 calories in your daily diet, depending on your age.

It should come as no surprise that soda is associated with weight gain, as it contains approximately 150 calories per can.

Speaking of which, those calories are completely empty, completely derived from sugar. In fact, a can of soda contains anywhere from 35 to 61 grams of sugar in each can! (Related: 30 Worst Sodas Never Drink.)

An adult American consumes only 40 pounds [13 kg] of sugar per soda each year. And research shows that the consumption of sugary drinks contributes to weight gain in both adults and children. This is especially so since most sodas contain high-fructose corn syrup. Your body can only process fructose from this liver, and it cannot use fructose as much as it does with glucose. This contributes to significant weight gain as well as immunity and glucose tolerance.

Over the years, many studies have linked the use of soda with weight gain. And it is getting worse: The International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and the Physical Activity Study found that although participants exercised when drinking soda, they were still gaining weight. In other words, exercise will not help you protect against the weight gain associated with drinking soda.

Soda is not only linked to weight gain, it also has a negative impact on your overall health, as alcohol is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart problems, depression, liver disease, and the risk of premature death.

Because reducing calories - any calories in any food or drink - will help you lose weight, you don't have to rely on removing soda alone from your diet to lose weight. This is particularly so as few and very few Americans drink soda regularly (45.8% of US citizens surveyed in a recent study report that they do not drink soda at all.) But if you are a soda drinker, you should consider not reducing the habit. Replace it with your liquid drink, or try one of these 25 healthy, low-sugar ones.
