Everything that has been created and comes from the ground has a specific purpose. Humans have the job of figuring out the uses of plants that are growing from the earth. One such herbal plant is sage which has a very unique history due to its medicinal and also culinary uses. Sage is native to the Mediterranean region and is used either fresh or dried as a flavoring in many foods. It is particularly popular for cooks to use in stuffings for sausages, poultry, and pork. I recall when I was a young girl, my great grandmother and other older women in the community used sage as a spice. It was used on Turkeys during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

For many, the only use of sage they are aware of is from television shows where individuals smudge homes with burning sage in order to cleanse it from negativity. Because of this, there are religious communities that say that sage should never be touched. To those I say, just because you question the method that this herb is utilized by some does not indicate that you should through the baby out with the bathwater. The French once produced bountiful crops of sage which they used for making tea to drink. The Chinese became so fond of French sage tea, they began trading four pounds of their own Chinese tea for one pound of the sage. In 812 AD, sage was one of the plants deemed so highly that Charlemagne ( King of the Franks in Germany at the time) decided it would be planted on German Imperial farms.

Burning sage is controversial because of the purpose for which some people use it, Native Americans incorporated sage in their religious rituals but some people today say the herb is utilized in occult rituals and opens doors for evil spirits. There are others who use it and say it drives dark forces away. To burn sage involves lighting sage leaves with a match or lighter and allowing the smoke to purify the atmosphere in your home. You can also by small bundles of sage known as sticks. Sage has many uses that are beneficial to humans. It will improve the air quality inside your home, and decrease depression snd anxiety as well.

It is also believed that sage can improve overall well-being and physical health. Sage, (Salvia) as mentioned earlier can be used as a spice and also has been utilized in traditional medicine. Please keep in mind that burning sage produces smoke. If you deal with asthma or other respiratory issues please check with your health care provider.

The history of Sage dates back to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans who used it for medicinal purposes, and Native Americans utilized it for healing. When dried sage is burned it is said to improve the immune system, fight disease, bring healing increase wisdom, and offer protection. I recently was in a home where sage was burning and it had a sweet aroma that was similar to marijuana in decades past. (NOT THE SKUNK SMELL).

A 2005 study revealed that sage oil improved thinking ability, AKA memory and cognition.In addition, improvements were experienced in mood and feeling more alert, calm, and content. when the oil dosage was increased. Additional research suggests that the active compounds in sage can protect against neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia and Alzheimer's.There are some health conditions that are believed to be a result of poor air quality and sage helps to improve indoor air.

There are many reason people burn sage, and twisted of them are for improved mental and physical health. There are also those who believe that burning sage is frmonic or that it will attract evil spirits. Sage was placed in the earth by the Creator and everything that was created has purpose in spite of the fact that there may be times when misuse and abuse occurs.
