Corona Virus (COVID-19)

Corona Virus (COVID-19) disease is the most recently discovered infectious disease. Most people who become infected with it experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others, especially older people and those living with underlying medical conditions.

Here are some simple measures by which you can protect your and other people’s health from corona virus.

Everyone can follow these recommendations, but these are especially important if you are in an area where people are known to have an infection with COVID-19.

1. Wash Your Hands Frequently

Clean your hands regularly and thoroughly with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or wash them with soap and water.

Why? We often use our hands to touch objects and surfaces that may be contaminated with the corona virus. Without knowing it, we then touch our face, transferring the virus to our eyes, nose and mouth where they can infect us. Washing your hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer kills viruses that may be on your hands, including viruses that cause COVID-19.

2. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose and Mouth.

We often touch our face without seeing it. Be aware of this, and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth and then it can enter your body and make you sick.

3. Cover Mouth When You Cough.

Make sure that you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means that when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with the bend of your elbow. Immediately put the used Tissue in a closed dustbin and wash your hands.

Why?When someone coughs or sneezes, they excrete small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth that may contain the virus. By covering your cough or sneeze, you avoid spreading the virus and other germs to other people. By using a twist of your elbow or a tissue to cover your cough or sneeze and not using your hands, you avoid transferring contaminated drops to your hands. This prevents you from contaminating a person or surface through touching it with your hands.

4. Avoid Contact with Crowded Places and Anyone Who has Fever or Cough.

Avoid crowded spaces, especially if you are over 60 years old or have an underlying health condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart and lung disease or cancer. Keep a distance of at least 1 meter between you and anyone who has fever or cough.

Why? COVID-19 is mainly spread by respiratory droplets that come out of the mouth or nose when a person has a disease and coughs. By avoiding crowded spaces, you should keep yourself away (at least 1 meter) from people who may be infected by COVID-19 or any other respiratory disease.

5. Stay Home If You Feel Unwell

Stay home if you feel unwell even with slight fever and cough.

Why? By staying home and not going to work or other places, you will recover faster and avoid transmitting diseases to other people.

6. If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention quickly

If you have fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention quickly — if you can, call your hospital or health center first so they can tell you where you should go.

Why? This will help ensure that you get the right advice, give you information for the right healthcare, and prevent you from infecting others.

7. Get Information from Reliable Sources

Be aware of the latest information about COVID-19 from reliable sources. Make sure your information comes from reliable sources — your local or national public health agency, the World Health Organization (WHO) website, or your local health professional.

Everyone should know the symptoms of the corona virus — for most people, it starts with fever and dry cough.

Why? Local and national authorities will have the most updated information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what the people in your area should do for their own safety.
