These are pandemic times when the deadly Coronavirus or Covid19 is holding the entire world in its vice-like grip for months and years together. This virus principally affects the respiratory system, including lungs, and often starts with simple symptoms like throat congestion, cough, cold, fever, breathing difficulties, etc.

This scenario has brought into prominence Kabasura Kudineer, the traditional Siddha concoction, which has proved pretty effective against cold and related ailments for years. Kabasura Kudineer contains as many as 15 ingredients, and Thippili remains a principal one among them.

Thippili is an ancient plant, found highly efficacious for cough, cold, and the like and hence has been used extensively as a traditional remedy for such conditions. So, it is no surprise that it has remained a vital ingredient in many herbal and Ayurvedic preparations, including the well-known Kabasura Kudineer.

Thippili Features

Called Thippili in Tamil, its botanical name is Piper Longum, while it is called Long Pepper in English and Pippali in Hindi.

Thippili’s dried fruits and roots both possess much therapeutic value and are used widely in the medical system. While the fruits go by the name ‘Arisi Thippili,’ in Tamil, the roots are called ‘Kanda Thippili.’

Forms of Use

Thippili can be used variously as Churna, the herbal powder, or Rasam, the traditional soup, and can be equally effective in any form.

Thippili Churna, the powdered Thipplli, can be made even at home by leaving its fruits in the hot Sun till these are dried completely or by roasting them in the stove. It is then cooled, ground, or powdered in a dry mixer or in mortar and pestle and made as Churna. These Thippili Churnas are also readily available in markets, generally with some added ingredients. Kanda Thippili Rasam, the soup, is made of Thippili roots mixed with a variety of elements as a traditional preparation at home.

5 Top Health Benefits of Thippili

Thillipi has immense therapeutic value, while the diseases or medical conditions it can treat can also be termed innumerable. Here, let us learn in brief about 5 top health benefits and medical uses of this amazing herbal plant.

Throat irritation can appear as a minor discomfiture but can open the gates for more serious conditions like cough, cold, chest congestion, and fever. So, by treating throat irritation as soon as it is felt even slightly, people can save themselves from further complications. About 1 gm of Thippili Churna powder can be mixed with honey and consumed both in the morning and evening for instant relief from throat irritation.

Cough and cold are perhaps the most common ailments that can affect people, in all stages of life, from infants to the elderly. These can be highly contagious, spread easily to others, and can lead to fever and other more severe conditions. Stopping these from escalating and curing them can be the next best health benefit of Thippili. A gram of Thippili taken in warm milk mixed with some turmeric powder can be a highly effective home medicine for such illnesses.

Throat irritation, cough, and cold, if left unchecked, can cause fever and related problems. But Thippili can be a powerful medicine for fever, too, which can be taken preferably with dried ginger (Sukku) and pepper. Further, Asthma can be a chronic condition that can cause severe breathing problems and make life extremely painful at times. This Thippili, Sukku, pepper combine, more popularly known as Trikadugam or Trikatu, can also help keep Asthma under check and provide welcome relief to the patients.

Thippili can also reduce cholesterol, whereas applying Thippili powder mixed in water over the teeth can mitigate tooth pain.

Caution

But, a word of caution on the Thippili-use, here.

Thippili is characterized by its strong, spicy taste. It is the alkaloid Piperine that gives this herbal plant its pungent tang. Thippili can as such be given to children as a safe, traditional medicine, but that has to be only in minimal quantities; for, the young ones may not stand its stinging taste.

Also, Long Pepper in moderate doses may not have any side effects, but it is believed to have some anti-fertility properties. So, it is advisable for pregnant ladies and nursing mothers not to take Thippili, at least in large quantities.
