5 Options for Insomnia

Use what works!

In case some of you don't know, insomnia is when you can't sleep. It can be caused by tons of different reasons such as high levels of stress, grief, restless leg syndrome, and more. I have dealt with insomnia for as long as I can remember, and I know a lot of others who experience the same thing. Insomnia is not a death-threatening medical condition, and it's not going to cause you any harm. So no need for panic.

"Treating" insomnia can be super easy if you do your research. Most people go straight to the word "cannabis" they think it's going to magically cure their insomnia, while for others it's just an excuse to smoke it or get a medical card. Insomnia is NOT a medical condition and is not an excuse to use marijuana when illegal whenever you want. Studies show that using insomnia as an excuse to smoke/use cannabis actually makes your insomnia worse, due to the mindset that "I need to use it to sleep" while it causes you to sit awake and use it, get hungry, etc.

Here are some easy, natural and effective ways to "treat/stop" insomnia:

1. Essential Oils

Essential oils are completely natural oil derivatives from different plants, that can be used alone, used with other oils, or even in a diluted oil mixture. They can pretty much be found in any health store/site. Some of the best include young living, melaleuca, doTerra, and more.

~My personal favorite is the "peace and calming blend" from Young Living. Applying to the bottom of your feet helps to fall asleep so much faster!

2. Turn OFF your electronics.

The #1 cause of insomnia is sitting on your electronics. Even having them turned on by your bed, when you get a notification it turns on. An hour or two before you got to sleep, turn off all your electronics and don't go on them AT ALL! It will make it way easier to fall asleep. So that means get a real alarm clock.

3. Melatonin

Melatonin is a natural sleeping supplement that you can get at pretty much anywhere a pharmacy is present. It will be located with the vitamins. Some stores include Walmart, Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs, and more.

4. Drink some hot tea.

Tea is calming to the body, the exact opposite of coffee. The best tea to drink to help with insomnia is chamomile tea. Chamomile tea has been a natural remedy for hundreds of years. It mainly treats inflammation, anxiety and mostly insomnia. In many cultures, it's regarded as a mild tranquilizer or a natural sleep inducer due to the components in the tea. The main sleeping/calming agent is an antioxidant called apigenin.

5. Drink warm milk before bed.

This is a good one, but very uncommon for people to try. You can also warm almond milk if you are vegan/vegetarian. Milk is a great source of calcium, and is super easy to find at any grocery or corner store near you. So when you drink the warm milk/almond milk (obviously milk works better than almost milk) the calcium triggers something in the brain that helps the brain naturally make melatonin. Is an inexpensive, easy and fast way to sleep and allows you to stop taking the melatonin supplements (if you regularly take them to sleep)

*If the melatonin supplement works best for you, please remember that, with any pill/supplement, you will become immune to it if you take it every day if not multiple times/doses. You need to limit the use of melatonin to times you really need it. Don't use every day just because you "think" you cannot sleep without it!

Hope these work!
