found via google search....but isn't it lovely?!

By now we have practically all heard the term Hygge and what it means for mental health and a cozy, happy life. For those of you who haven't heard of it, let me explain:

Hygge is a term that originates from Danish culture. By definition it means a quality of coziness and comfort that encourages a feeling of contentment or well-being. To adopt a Hygge lifestyle means to incorporate it into your home decor, food, social life, and mental health. During the winter months especially we can see how this would really help with that seasonal depression or just improving your life in general.

This article is about how we can add a more natural, old world, witchy feel into our Hygge practices. When I think of witchy things, I think of glass bottles, dried flowers, baking cookies and bread, tea, books, crystals, and fabrics all over the place. When I think of Hygge I think soft fabric, faux fur blankets and pillows, candles, soup, baking, laughter and pajamas. So naturally combining the two just sounds too heavenly to me!

Let's start with decorating in a witchy hygge way. A basic decor list Iv'e made up included things that naturally initiate a warm, magickal feeling in your home and by extension makes being home better and far more appealing:

1. Fake candles (and real). I recommend fake candles because they stay on for hours and you don't have to worry about a waxy mess afterwards. Save the real candles for when you can keep an eye on them, like during dinner.

2. Blankets & Pillows. Personally I love my weighted faux fur throw blanket and my faux fur throw pillows, but if you don't like the faux fur feel (say that five times fast) then at least make sure that the ones you get are soft and in a fabric that you find enjoyable!

3. Books. I think we all subconsciously feel comforted by the presence of books. To quote Marcus Cicero, A room without books is like a body without a soul. The beauty of this is you can pick any kind of book! Are you an avid reader? Bring out your favorite series and showcase in an eye pleasing way. Not much of a reader? than go to an antique book store and grab some novels that appeal to your aesthetic and the hygge feel of the room.

4. Crystals. The great thing about crystals is that you can find them in any price range! Decorating with ones that appeal to you is pretty easy and magickal in their own right. I prefer to shop for crystals in person, but online is a great and convenient way to find some too!

5. Fairy lights. Lighting is a very important contributor to the hygge aesthetic. clear lights are best for any mood, but feel free to get them in any color that increases a cozy feel. I like fairy lights better than christmas lights because when I look at a christmas light strand my brain tends to stay in holiday mode, which is not something I want all year or all winter round.

6. Warm food and drink. If you are someone who loves to bake and cook, than this will be fun and easy for you to do right at home and the process of making warm treats will only add to the hygge feel. But don't be discouraged if you are one who burns water. Grabbing pre-made cookies or canned soup from the grocery store is perfectly acceptable!

Following this list will in itself add quite the feel to your home, but if you really want to step up the witchy hygge feel, than don't be afraid to add aesthetically pleasing things like witchy books, dried flowers, glass vials, fake vines, a DIY fireplace (or turn your tv into one via youtube or netflix), velvet, scented candles, incense, new coffee mugs, faux fur rugs, etc. Anything that makes your living space comfy and happy.

Witchy hygge food is pretty easy for anyone. Baking in itself is very hygge, but add a spell or intent to your recipe and it instantly becomes magickal! Finding recipes you would like to try is easy now-a-days. I have found some of the best cookie and cake recipes on Pinterest. The best foods for helping us get into the hygge spirit are things like soup, bread, cookies, cake, coffee, tea, anything warm really. So have a baking day with friends and family or just experiment with a new soup recipe while you're having some me-time. Whatever you do, always taste-test....A Lot!

Bringing witchy hygge into social interactions is also super easy. Host a dinner serving something you baked with a spell, have people over for a movie night all snuggled in the living room you decorated with crystals, blankets and lights, have a coffee date, go for a walk and have cocoa afterwards wrapped up in warmth. The ideas are limitless, and all that matters is enjoying the company and being as happy as possible.

Some ideas for a witchy hygge a feel when you are alone include taking a bath with essential oils, surrounded by candles and crystals (make sure if you have crystals by the water that they don't fall in or make sure they are the kind of crystals that don't react to water in a bad way). Play some music or turn on the fireplace while you drink a hot drink, or play music and a fireplace at the same time with youtube. Do a spell or meditate with only the fairy lights and candles on for lighting. Or do the readers perfection and cozy up with a hot drink and cookies under a blanket, mood lighting, fireplace and just read a book to your hearts content!

Incorporating Hygge into you life is extremely easy and tons of fun. It brings happiness to your life and eases any stress that may come up. It reminds us that our home is our haven as long as we treat it that way, and can be a great blessing. Adding a witchy aspect to the hygge wave adds an old world, spiritual magick and just reminds us that there is magick in the world, even if we don't see it that often. To me, witchy hygge is laughter, connection, peace, confidence. It's happy times with the people we love, really tasting our food and drinks, really feeling the softness of our homes, and really seeing the beauty that life can offer us. It's a magick all its own.
