Challenge for Organization

Thoughts on Organization

So, just recently, we moved into a new apartment. Our first one as a group. My fiancé, my bestfriend, and myself have found it difficult to organize our things. But, while being on this new adventure of being out of the house, I have also done some thinking on how to fix my organization.

My Current Organization:

To start, I used to just throw things around my room as a child. My clothes would be on the floor, my collectibles on shelves and not even in order, the list goes on forever. I would sometimes fold my clothes and put them in the designated drawers, until I got lazy and threw them wherever.

I also had cats. Mittens and Skye, two adorable sisters who caused so much havoc on my things. It's a laughable thing now, but at the time, they would knock my stuff off of the shelves and onto the floor. Which included filled cups of drinks. My room was totally trashed and I could never get inside sometimes. At times, my mother would often call me the occasional "slob."

Now that I'm no longer living with my mom, I can finally work on some deep organization. Having other people around me helps too. After doing some long and hard research, I have found some better ways to organize. Hopefully with this research, I can get better and more neater in everything else. While I was researching, I also came across a quote: "If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed." (Quote by: William H. McRaven)

Ways to Organize:

Making your bed is the best way to start organization. Even if that's the only thing you do, you start to feel good that you even made your own bed. Feeling good about something YOU did, encourages you to clean more. For me, I make my bed almost all the time. It helps me get on to doing my laundry and doing the dishes when it's my turn.

Tips for doing laundry: fold the small stuff first. Garments are usually the easiest thing to fold and sort, making it easier to move on to shirts and pants. Whenever you find a place to put your laundry, you could color code or even stack them neatly from left to right. For me, it's easier to manage while it looks nice and you're still encouraged from making your bed.

For basic things like art supplies and papers, find a place you can set the majority of your things on. A bookcase or desk will work depending on the sizes. If you can, getting a tiered organizer for papers can help. Important papers like birth certificates and bills can go in the slots on an organizer. Even getting a small binder with pockets in it works too. Anything that will keep documents from getting bent and messed up will help.

Dishes are also difficult to organize when you first move in somewhere. Buying the right utensils and not having a organizer for your drawers are a nightmare. Doing dishes also is a put off for some people because you deal with old food and squishy food. For doing the dishes,

Sometimes if you have lived somewhere for so long, doing a spring cleaning can go a long way to help you out too. Tips on dishes, is doing the silverware and utensils first. They're small, and not too hard to get rinsed to put in the dishwasher. Plates and bowls can go next too and on the bottom of the dishwasher racks. Pots and pans usually have to be hand washed, but if not, put those near the middle of the rack on the bottom.

Spring Cleaning Tips:

Spring cleaning is one of many teenagers least favorite time of the year. Mothers everywhere want their children to go through their things and throw out old clothes that no longer fit them. Some adults don't even know how to get started when doing spring cleaning. Which is complete okay!

Easy thing that I have found through asking my mother, was to find trash that was easy to pick up. Thirty minutes a day helps too. But if you are one of those workaholics, thirty minutes an hour it is. Trash first, then pick up small objects. Figuring out where smaller objects can go is tough. Sometimes for the time being, put them in a place you can remember to put away. Like the kitchen table. Then it's doing the cleaning with products. Like mopping the floor and vacuuming.

I've also found that doing one room at the time helps too. Just taking time to do specific rooms, really helps. Sometimes just doing one thing at a time will make things easier. I enjoy doing things around the house when I have something playing in the background. Like music, or a podcast, sometimes YouTube even. Just having something to jam to can help boost your want to organize and spring clean.

Organization and spring cleaning is tough. Sometimes even exhausting. But, if you take the time and do easy steps and start with thirty minutes at a time, it gets easier and less messy. I may be no expert, but I learned a lot from my mom and grandmother. That's another thing that's optional. If some of these tips don't work, ask them or someone you know for advice. It never hurts to ask. Remember though, if you want to change the world, start by making your bed.
