If you own a pet, the idea of your beloved dog or cat getting fleas is probably a constant concern. These tiny parasites feed on animal blood and can quickly become an issue in your home. In fact, they may even abandon your pet and begin biting you and your family.

Even though fleas are relatively small, they are able to jump further than any other insect. If you believe that you have a flea problem and you want to get rid of them for good, there are some home remedies you can try. These will help ensure your flea problem is eliminated, once and for all.

Purchase Flea Repelling Plants

If you want to get rid of fleas and spruce up your home, consider using the right plants. There are certain plants that actually repel fleas, including lavender, chrysanthemums, penny royal, and spearmint. You can put these in your yard or bring some inside in pots. They offer an effective way to keep fleas at bay.

Rosemary

Another organic way to get rid of fleas is with rosemary. It’s the ideal treatment for lighter infestations, and to handle problems with fleas on your pets (this is dependent on how you are using it). With this option for treating fleas, you have to create a powder with this ingredient.

If you want to make an herbal flea powder that uses rosemary, put the herb with some peppermint, fennel, wormwood, and run into a pestle and a mortar and begin to grind it until it forms a powder. Once you have the powder, you can sprinkle it over your windowsills, pet bedding, furniture, and carpet, or anywhere else that you believe there are fleas in your home.

Diatomaceous Earth

This is another effective treatment for getting rid of fleas. All diatomaceous earth is, is the microscopic remains of fossilized diatoms and algae. It’s an extremely fine powder and is non-toxic to humans. The method works because it will cause dehydration, which kills the fleas.

All you have to do it is to sprinkle the powder over the areas that you believe where there is high flea activity. Simply apply it in thin layers. You can leave the diatomaceous earth to work for approximately two days and then vacuum it up.

Make sure that you use the food grade option if this is the natural flea remedy you choose. Even though it is non-toxic, the powder may get messy and it can irritate your throat and eyes. It’s also a good idea to use a face mask when applying this method around your house.

Lemon Spray

There are several ways that lemon can be used around your house. In addition to being great to apply to wasp stings, it is also an effective home remedy for a flea problem. To use this remedy to get rid of fleas, all you have to do is make a citrus infused spray for using on any infected furniture. To make this spray, just slice a lemon very thinly and put it in a pint of water. Bring this to a boil. Allow the citrus solution to remain overnight and put it into a spray bottle. After it has sat for a day, you can spray the solution on any infested parts of your home, such as chairs, pet bedding, sofas, and more. Just make sure to dampen the area being treated, don’t soak it.

Salt

Similar to baking soda, salt is another effective natural remedy for getting rid of fleas. It works as a dehydration agent to get rid of adult fleas. For treating fleas using salt, just take some finely ground salt and sprinkle it throughout your home, over the carpet. Leave it in place for one to two days and then vacuum your home carefully. Be sure to empty the contents of what you vacuum up in a trash can outside.

Dish Soap

To use this remedy, create a flea trap using water and dish soap. Fill a bowl or plate with a mixture of the soap and warm water and put it in any room where the fleas are. The solution will act like a glue and trap the fleas thanks to the higher viscosity of the solution that you created. The solution should be replaced daily.

With the information here, you should be on your way to getting rid of fleas naturally. If you need more help, or if these methods aren’t working, it’s a good idea to go ahead and call the pros for help.
