Here’s how to get rid of your unwanted gift cards...

In 2018, U.S. gift card transactions totaled an estimated $160 billion, according to CEB. And surprisingly, of that amount, $1 billion goes unclaimed. So, it’s no surprise if you’ve found yourself the recipient of an unwanted gift card. Unwanted gift cards can be frustrating. After all, what do you do with it? Turns out, there is plenty you can do! Read on to find out how to get rid of your unwanted gift cards.

Sell or trade your gift cards online

There are a plethora of websites that will allow you to sell or trade your unwanted gift cards. It is unlikely that you will get the full value of your gift card if you sell it, but it is much better than letting the card go unused. If you want to get the full value of your card, you are better off trading it.

A few online websites that allow you to sell or trade your unwanted gift cards are:

• Gift Card Granny

• Raise

• CardPool

• CardCash

If your gift card is from a popular place, such as Amazon, Apple, Best Buy, Home Depot, iTunes, Starbucks, Target, or Walmart, you will have a better chance of trading or selling it. Usually, there are two options for selling a gift card: listing it yourself or selling it directly to the website for a bit less.

Many of these online retailers, including CardCash (contrary to the name), will allow you to trade gift cards with others in addition to selling them. CardCash – and many others- will also buy your unwanted gift cards directly from you. CardCash claims that it will pay up to 92% of a gift card’s full value.

Carpool, a different online gift card service, also offers up to 92% of the gift card that you sell them. However, they also offer a unique bonus. Sellers will get an additional 6% of the value of the unwanted gift card if they choose to receive payment via an Amazon gift card instead of cash. This is an excellent option for those who would find an amazon gift card desirable.

Some gift card brokers also have mobile apps for buying and selling gift cards. Some of those sites offer to let you list your gift cards for free and have payment options such as direct deposit, PayPal, or even a check in the mail.

If you would prefer a different way to sell gift cards online, there is a gift card exchange on the social media site Reddit. However, Reddit operates differently from other social media platforms and may require some learning if you are not familiar with the platform.

Finally, avoid scams when selling or trading gift cards online by using PayPal or other verified services. PayPal offers a buyer protection guarantee.

Exchange your unwanted gift cards for cash from kiosks and retailers

Some online gift card brokers, including CardPool and Gift Card Granny, offer physical locations such as kiosks or cashier-assisted transactions. This can be a great choice if you are concerned about scams and prefer to get your cash in person, up front. There are often many kiosks, locations, and branches available for this service across the country.

Conclusion

There are a few choices that you have if you are looking to get rid of unwanted gift cards. You can sell or trade your gift cards online through a few different websites. The most well known of these websites are Gift Card Granny, Raise, CardPool, and CardCash. If you prefer to trade your gift cards in person, some online gift card brokers, including CardPool and Gift Card Granny, offer physical locations such as kiosks or cashier-assisted transactions. Regardless of how you choose to sell or trade your gift card, take precautions- such as using Paypal or going to a kiosk in person- to avoid being scammed.
