How to Have a Successful Garage Sale

In 10 Easy Steps

So you're getting ready to have a garage sale? Not only that, but you are trying to have a successful one too. Good news! You have come to the right place to know exactly how to do that! I hope you don't mind teaming up with friends and advertising online ..

1. Get Stock

Look around the house and get anything you really don't want or need anymore. When you put things out for garage sale, it's going to look like a lot less than when it's in storage, so if you have to wait until next year .. that's an option too.

2. Organize Said Stock

Put everything a bin (or several bins) titled "Garage Sale." This way you won't get confused and accidentally donate it, or worse ... have it slowly reintegrate back into your house.

If you want, you can separate the stuff by category (like clothes, toys, etc,). However, categorization is completely optional.

3. Ask family and friends if they want to join to make a 'multi house garage sale.'

When it comes to garage sales, bigger is better ... so do your best to try to get more people involved. This will not only help you have more stock and drive more people into the area, it can also help you have more fun.

4. Promote a 'community garage sale day' or 'Street garage sale day.'

Find a community Facebook page or bulletin board and suggest that the community should all have garage sales on the same day ... conveniently on the same as your garage sale.

You might think that having more than one garage sale creates competition ... but the truth is that having more than one garage sale on the same day helps promote more traffic in the area!

5. Advertise Online

There are so many places to post online to promote your garage sale.

Kijiji, Craig's List, Facebook, Varage Sale, etc.

6. Make Signs

Make sure to have signs with arrows pointing a bunch of different directions. More specifically, make signs with arrows that will point towards your house from the end of the street. The arrows help drive traffic so much!

Put the signs with arrows up the night before (and if you remember, take them down the day after).

If you have other smaller signs without arrows you can put them up a couple days in advance, just leave the obnoxious signs for last minute.

7. Get small change from the bank.

This is the one thing I almost forgot before my amazing boyfriend reminded me. People are probably going to try to pay in bills, so head to bank and get at least some small change so you can make change at garage sale.

8. Get a table cloth to put items on.

Laying items on the ground on your lawn can be not pretty to look at and abit uninviting, I mean you are obviously going to have some things on the ground ... but have a table too! When you do put things on the ground, put an old blanket underneath it.

9. Pricing!

Figure out how much you are going to price things. Try to make it as cheap as possible.

How are you going to let people know the pricing? Are you going to put stickers on everything with the prices?

10. Make coffee and try to have fun!

The day has come and it's finally garage sale day!

People are going to try to talk you down prices and not all of them will be nice ... some might even just be plain creepy! It's okay to be talked down a little bit. After all, you are trying to get rid of all the stuff ... right?

Just try to stay positive and try to have fun.

Playing fun music is also a great way to keep both you and the potential customers in a good mood!

Bonus Tip!

Wear sunscreen on the day of the garage sale! You are going to be out there all day, and sunburn can dampen the party-like mood.
