Have you been wondering how to celebrate a Green Diwali? If you are someone who cares about the environment, I am sure you are wondering about this. Here are some ways to celebrate this festival of light in ways that are not only joyous to us but also safe for our surroundings, children, and fellow fauna

First, let us understand what Green Diwali is. It is simple: Green Diwali is a way to celebrate this festival with little to no harm to our environment.

Bursting crackers has always been an integral part of Diwali, but we should understand that it is okay to say no to traditions that do more harm than good. Say a big no to crackers because it harms our environment by causing air and noise pollution. Also, crackers are detrimental to heart patients, patients with respiratory disorders. Also, it harms our children and pets at home.

If crackers have to be blasted, go for alternative green crackers that support the livelihood of the local cracker industry and reject the imported crackers.

Take a pledge this Diwali to end the use and throw culture that is so prevalent during festivities. Do not use one-time-use cups, plates, and bowls for the festival food distribution. Use reusable cups; if one-time-use cannot be avoided, you can always go for bamboo, areca leaf products, and traditional banana leaf.

Recycle and reuse, don’t dispose of the diyas and other decorative pieces of stuff to trash, reuse them next year, rummage your storeroom for the decorative pieces used in the previous years. Upcycling is one of the best ways to reduce the impact on the environment.

Prefer green packaging, this is a method used to pack materials and gifts to reduce the harmful impacts of packaging on the environment. You can reuse gift wrappers from the gifts others presented you, wrappers from old presents such as your birthdays, and others. You can also use old newspapers and handmade papers instead of plastic wrappers. Or skip wrapping altogether.

When distributing sweets and snacks to your neighbours and friends, make sure you don’t use plastic containers, use reusable containers, and let them think of you every time they use it again.

Use the things that are already available in the house for decorations rather than shopping, as previously mentioned, decorative pieces of stuff from the previous years, old utensils, or fabrics to make some unique and interesting DIY decorations. Creative DIY decoration tutorials are only one click away on youtube channels. Also, DIY gives a personal touch to your home decorations.

Every year around the time of Diwali, the market is filled with pieces that will end up in the landfill. This year shop for beautiful earthen diyas instead of wax, plastic, or foam. Make a conscious choice of buying handpainted diyas and decorative pieces that are painted with natural dye. Also, make it a priority to shop these pieces locally that will support local artisans and potters.

Switch to eco-friendly Rangoli and never go back! Rangoli powder used to be made of rice and the colours were made of natural colours such as turmeric and vermillion. It used to be a way of feeding small birds and animals in ancient times. You can revisit this old tradition by choosing organic rangoli powders or making some at home.

Eating healthy is a good way to ensure this Diwali that all your family, friends, and your environment are cared for. Instead of buying carbonated drinks and other unhealthy food, go for healthy dry fruits and sweets from the local sweet shop.

This Diwali ditch the shiny plastic fancy gifts that no one has a use or a place for. Switch to mindful gifts such as indoor plants and outdoor plants, jute bags, and khadi clothing for your loved ones.

Reduce the consumption of electricity by using natural lights, diyas, and biodegradable lighting alternatives. This way, we can feel this festival to the fullest without the disturbance of blaring bright light.

While shopping for this Diwali, from essentials to decorative pieces, keep in mind the pandemic and its effects on local artisans and shopkeepers. Shop locally and mindfully, don’t buy clothes, gifts, and other materials that are imported. This thoughtful shopping helps not only your local industries but also your environment by reducing the stress on it that are caused due to shipping.

May every diya you light bring happiness and prosperity to you and your family, and every diya you light care for our nature. Happy Green Diwali from Homes247.in!
