It is obvious that some people are smarter than others, some are more creative, some are stronger or faster, and some are kind, while some are just simply more productive!

In general, they are simply better than the rest of us.

Better doctors, better lawyers, better programmers, better engineers, or even better students!

Why they are better - and how we can become better is the question we all chase every single day.

The attribute of people who are Best-in-class

The following attribute applies to every kind of profession, but I will select only three popular ones just to make my point. You can think in terms of your profession.

Let us start with better doctors. I guess all the doctors out there and all their patients will agree that a better doctor is the one who does better diagnoses. Because a better and more precise diagnosis will help the doctor make better choices, which will help them make better decisions. It will also help doctors use better resources, get better support, and finally get better results.

The same is true with lawyers. The better they understand your case, the better proof they will be able to secure. Engineers are good at solving problems. But what is even more important here is that they are particularly good at defining the problem. They will go after every kind of question just for one thing. To understand why things, work the way they work. Then they come up and provide a better solution.

So, as you may already realize, all the best-in-class people have one thing in common. They are the best definers. They have learned how to define things well.

So, can you define things well?! I think you can! You are incredibly good to know what you want in your life. The only problem is that you have not put enough effort into defining it well enough.

Let me explain what I mean by defining things well enough.

Since all of us have some sort of project. Let us try to explain this from the project manager's perspective. And I will keep it quite simple.

The Project Management perspective

The 5 basic phases of a project cycle are the Initiation-phase, planning phase, launch or execution phase, Management-or-Control-phase, and the Closing-phase.

From this point of view, it may look obvious what we want, right?! You want to complete that project and deliver it on time successfully! But why do some people fail? and why some others are successful in delivering their projects one after another! Are these guys geniuses? Well, maybe! But if you would ask the project manager the same question, he or she will tell you that those who completed the project successfully are those who managed and controlled situations better.

How? – By executing the project better.

How do they execute better? Well by planning their resources better.

Ok, tell me how they plan better. By clearly defining want they want or what is required.

See?! What project managers call as “Initiation phase”, is the “Definition phase” indeed.

And this phase is the genesis of your success (or your failure!). It is the most important part of any project. You should master it.

Many people simply jump into planning without clearly defining their objectives. Some others jump into the action without even planning it properly. But soon they realize that they jumped into big trouble.

So, if you want to become better at something. You need to master the definition phase. You will immediately realize how easy it is to plan for it when you start to plan. How easy is it to execute and complete it fast?

Remember, the better you define yourself – the higher the chances of success.

Nobody can help you to become better at something if you have not defined what you need. But if you define well enough what you need or what is required, then it is guaranteed that you will have a cleaner plan of action, and much easier execution, you will resolve problems with ease, and you will do just as well as the best-in-class do.

All right. How do I define my success criteria, you may ask? Well, thankfully there are tools and techniques for defining things like success criteria and defining your goals and objectives. If you like the way we explain things here on this blog, simply follow up, and we will work together and learn a lot about every technique they use.
