The teeth is a very important part of the body. It is very sensitive to pain owing to the presence of highly receptive nerves directly connected to the brain. The common tooth diseases include:

(1) Gingivitis: It is also known as gum disease, it is the inflammation of the gums. It results from plaque building on the teeth due to poor flossing and brushing habit. It makes your gum swell and bleeds while you brush and floss. Gingivitis when left untreated can lead to periodontitis.

(2) Periodontitis: this is a serious gum infection that can damage gums and destroy the jawbone. Periodontitis can spread to your jaw and bones. This can cause an inflammatory response in the whole body.

Some individuals have naturally sensitive teeth due to their thin enamel while others maybe because of lack of oral or dental hygiene.

(6) Oral Cancer: This can be any of; cancer of the gums, lips, tongue, cheek, the floor of the mouth, soft and hard soft palate.


A lot of micro-organisms like; bacteria, viruses, and fungi are being ingested orally. Some of these micro-organisms are part of the oral cavity, thereby making up the flora of your mouth. They are in little quantities and are generally harmless. Their population increases exponentially when you consume a food high in sugar, the sugar creates a good medium for acid-producing bacteria to flourish. The bacteria causes dental cavities by dissolving the tooth enamel. Bacteria close to your gum line thrive well in a sticky matrix known as plaque. Plaque accumulates, hardens the gum, and reduces the length of your tooth if it isn’t removed regularly through brushing and flossing. This can lead to inflammation of gums, resulting in a condition known as gingivitis. When there is increased inflammation, the gums begin to pull away from the teeth. This leads to periodontitis.

There are several factors that contribute to gingivitis and periodontitis. They include:

• Poor brushing habits

• Smoking

• Family history, or genetics

• Hormonal changes in women

• Certain infections, such as HIV or AIDS
