Did you already hear of Medium? Yes, you probably did, but just in case: Medium is a blogging site pretty similar to Vocal.media. Medium doesn't have the regular challenges which make writing on Vocal so alluring, but on the other hand, articles from Medium rank better in Google search. Both sites have their advantages and disadvantages, so if you are all about blogging on social platforms that have a built-in audience, it's good to participate in both.

Some of the differences between the two sites are:

On Vocal.media there is no paywall and everyone can read as many stories as they want. You can earn from all reads of your stories from any source without being a paying member, but if you want to participate in writer challenges and have a chance of winning a (usually big) cash prize, you must be a paying member. Paying members also have better conditions, like higher pay for read and lower payment treshold.) Additionally, Vocal allows people to give tips to writers and it's pretty easy to do, so that's definitely an advantage. You can also get bonuses from Vocal for various writing milestones such as nmber of stories or number of hearts given to other stories.

In contrast to that, Medium stories are hidden behind a paywall and you must become a paying member to be able to read more than 3 stories in a month. You can still participate in the Medium Partner program and get paid for reads of your articles, even if you aren't a paying member. (Although it's considered good etiquette to be a paying member and give to the community when you want to earn. Amongst the articles on Medium are also good guides on writing on this platform. Reading Medium articles helps you to get orientated on the site and find out what works.) But there is a big caveat to earning from reads: you get paid only for the Medium members' reads. In other words, only those subscribed to Medium or those who subscribe to Medium within a month from reading your story count towards your paycheck. There was only one big writer challenge with cash prizes so far, but others may come in the future.

And here comes the good part: Medium has an option to import an article from any other site on the internet. (It doesn't have to be Vocal.media, it can be also your personal blog. You just need to have the rights to the text you are importing.) When you import the article, Medium marks the source as canonical, so Google still knows which text is the original one. In other words, the original site doesn't lose any Google ranking this way.

So what does this mean? You can take any of your texts on Vocal that aren't participating in a challenge and import them over to Medium. To do so, you go on your Medium profile, click on "Stories", and then on the "Import a story" button on the top right. It's really that simple.

Then you can subscribe to the Medium Partner Program and earn money from reads of those articles on Medium AND Vocal. Pretty sweet, isn't it?

Writing isn't a hobby or job that pays very much, so any opportunity to increase your earnings is a good one.

One last thing: if you subscribe to Medium through my referral link here, I will get paid a portion of your membership fee. You can support my writing at no additional cost to you (and you will have my gratefulness :)) Good luck with your writing!
