If we want to be happy in life then we need to create the life we want, not that of what society tells us. We don’t have just live this repetitive life of go to work, to get the money, to get the energy, to go to work. We should always be able to do what we want in life, but we have to do out there and get it.

However, most of us live busy lives, 40 plus hours a week working in a dead job that we are not really interested in. The time off from work is spent with family and friends down the pub, on holiday abroad and then of course there’s the bills and maintaining the house to be done. Yes, it all has to be done, but is this busy and seeming less pointless life what we want?

I have spoken before about finding purpose in life, you might argue that purpose to be able to enjoy life with family doing what we want, when we’re not working. I would agree with that, but what about the work bit? The stress we carry from it when we are not there. What about all the ‘what ifs’ we carry because we don’t have time because of everything else that’s going on?

What do think would happen if you made one positive change in life a year for the next 5 years? What do think would happen if you found a new hobby, something just for you, something you always wanted to do? You start giving it maybe an hour every couple of weeks? What do think would happen if you started spending 10 minutes week looking into that business idea you have always wanted to pursue?

But where does the opportunity to create the life we want, come from? When we find a job? When we start a family? How about school? Each of the subjects we learn has an important significance behind them.

For example, History is about learning the mistakes of the past, to create a better future. Some complain that we don’t go back far enough, but history has repeated itself over again, in a different way, but it all comes down to the same thing.

Mathematics is not just about numbers but learning to make calculated choices. Kids complain they should be taught things like tax returns, but these are constantly changing, but the point behind the return and the lessons of the subject remains the same.

The English Language teaches us writing, to give the tools to write that perfect job application letter. Yet schools don’t teach how to behave in an interview as all jobs are different, some haven’t even been thought of.

Chemistry is not just about mixing chemicals together but preparing the basics to disarm war and fight plagues.

Biology is not just about learning about the human body, but the consequences of not being sensible in daily life.

Religion is about learning diversity and respect for those who believe differently from themselves.

PE is about learning the importance of being active as it is linked to mental health. And the list goes on.

But for us who have left school and plodding along in a rut, can we change? Can we create the life we want? Or is it all too late? Of course, it’s not too late we just need to stop, take stock and refocus.

Stopping is about taking that moment out, on a lunch break at work, or on the journey home. Think about what you want your life to look like? What is that end product going to look like? What is it that will truly make you happy? Things the new place should not include, divorce, putting kids up for adoption. It might be looking for a new job or moving to a new area.

It might mean you need to deal with past trauma properly, which might include seeking professional help. Never be ashamed to ask for help, because your past should never obstruct your present and certainly have no place in your future.

To create the life you want, you need to stop making excuses, ‘I’m too tired after work’, ‘I need to rest at work on my break’, ‘I have no time because I have kids.’ Everyone has the same 24 hours, everyone works hard and is busy, every parent has dilemmas. But how do you think those who became successful in creating the life they wanted when they had 40 hours a week jobs or 3 kids to bring up. They are people who just went out there and made it happen.

That is how you create the life you want; you go out and just make it happen. The best part is that you get to do it your way, there are no rules, you create them. As long as you don’t stop someone else from getting what they want, its open road. So go out and create the life you want.
