Gen Z kid here. I believe this generation to be one of the most influential generations to date.

Caught in the whirlwind of the golden age of information we are entitled. Growing up with everything at the tips of our fingertips has made us impatient, ungrateful even. With the wealth in the West, statistically, most of us haven’t lived with the struggle of having anything. With the screens shoved in our faces, life is drained away.

We love movies and shows. We love comedy. We love music. We love sports. We love technology. We love originality.

Except nobody talks about how spending up to 8 hours a day on your phone is bad for you. We all know it. In fact, we might even feel guilty for it. Trapped in addiction unknown is what I like to call it.

For a generation that is used to every minuscule problem being diagnosed, it seems we forgot or ignore the biggest one literally right in front of our faces and it’s not going away anytime soon. The following advice is all based on what I’ve read from Dr. Jordan Peterson in his book titled 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos.

So, what can you do now to make your life better?

In fact, ask yourself that very question and think. Think deeply.

What can I do right now, that would make my day better?

Follow the will of your answer. Make sure it involves some responsibility like cleaning up after yourself or looking after yourself or even looking out for someone else. Listen to the needs of your subconscious mind.

How long has it been since you’ve neglected it?

Often, addictions will do that without us knowing. It’s not even your fault really. We’ve had smartphones and tablets thrust in our faces our whole lives. In fact, it would even seem plausible and right to blame your parents for it, or your older sibling for it. They’ve thrown upon you something that has hijacked your biological reward system after all. They’ve opened Pandora’s box and now here you are dealing with the repercussions.

It’s okay to feel sad and depressed about that yet I believe you still owe it to your beautiful self to look after yourself.

What does that entail exactly?

Stop being a victim of life and start being the hero you always imagined yourself to be.

You are the main character of your story with a potentially purposeful role in everyone else’s.

I heard the following quote on a podcast,

“We live in a day and age where words speak louder than actions.”

And sadly, we do but we can change that. It’s time to lead by example and be accountable for your actions. Do what you need to do today to get you closer to your ideal self. After all, you probably idealize or worship someone who has done just that. They probably don’t spend five, six, seven hours a day on their electronic devices. It’s time to set a limit and truly help yourself.

How are you supposed to be bored otherwise?

Boredom leads to magnificence and beauty.

It turns the hamster wheel of fortune in your head.

Many of the greatest things I’ve ever conjured or dreamed about all came from doing nothing. With everything you know with the internet, your mind already has an infinite amount of inspiration to draw from. More so than the average person a hundred years ago.

This is what I meant when I said our generation could be the most influential to date.

Put a limit on your screentime, work on yourself, activate your creative and innovative thinking, and put in the hours. I absolutely cannot wait to see what you are going to accomplish professionally, academically, artistically, athletically, etc. I want to see you succeed and I’m pretty sure that little buried voice inside of you does too.
