There are dozens of fruitarian diet success stories, but is it right for you? Before you jump on the fruitarian diet bandwagon, make sure to consider these seven reasons why a fruitarian diet might be right for you. Not only that, but here are some other things to keep in mind when starting this type of diet to make sure that your body can get all the nutrients it needs from only eating fruits and vegetables.

No need to count calories

One of my favorite benefits of a fruitarian diet is that you don’t have to count calories! Because fruits are high in water and fiber, they are super low in energy density—meaning you can eat tons without getting fat. This means that when I fill up on fruit (which is practically all I do), I am not tempted to snack or overeat later.

Weight loss is a natural side effect

One of the biggest pros to eating only fruit (and nothing else) is that you’ll probably lose weight without even trying. That’s because fruits are made up of simple sugars, which are digested quickly and released into your bloodstream. Because they digest so fast, there isn’t enough time for your body to store any extra calories—so instead of being stored as fat, those excess carbs get excreted out of your body.

Increased energy

When people first switch to a fruitarian diet, many report feeling more energized. Increased energy may be due to eating fewer processed foods and more whole foods, or it could be related to not having excess amounts of protein in your diet. Many people who eat animal products regularly also feel less motivated as they eliminate these from their diets. As you give up meat and dairy and start eating an entirely plant-based diet, your body may learn how to convert food into energy faster.

Lowered cholesterol

A fruitarian diet lowers cholesterol by increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol. Your doctor will be pleased! Increased fiber: Fruit is high in fiber, which helps regulate bowel movements and decreases your risk of colon cancer, hemorrhoids, and diverticulosis. Rapid weight loss: Cut out all processed foods and animal products? Yep—you’ll lose weight!

Minimal risk of disease

A fruitarian diet can improve your overall health and reduce your risk of disease. As most plant-based diets are naturally low in fats, going fruitarian can be an excellent choice to lower your cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease. The lack of meat, salt, and sugars also lowers your chances of developing type 2 diabetes or other obesity-related diseases. And by including more fruits and vegetables in your diet, you’ll likely consume fewer calories and manage body weight more easily.

Improved digestion

Fresh fruit is easy to digest and high in fiber, which can help with weight loss. If you have issues with digestion, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Crohn’s Disease, avoiding inflammatory foods such as grains and beans may be beneficial.

Feeling lighter

Of course, weight loss might be one of your motivators if you’re considering adopting a fruit-based diet. The advantage of eating just fruits? High in fiber and low in calories, many of them are naturally high in water content, too. Research shows that people who eat diets rich in water-dense foods such as fruit feel full more quickly and stay satisfied longer than those who don’t.

No food cravings

Since you’re eating only fruit and other naturally sweet foods, there’s no room for cravings. And when you eliminate refined sugar from your diet, you’ll experience an abundance of energy in both body and mind. In fact, because fruit is easily digestible, many people report that they have more physical stamina on a fruit-only diet than on one that includes animal protein. (Check out what I eat in a day as a fruitarian.)

Wildly Delicious Fruits Available Everywhere

Wildly delicious fruits are available all over. In fact, if you live in North America or Europe, you’re probably close to several of these tasty plants: almonds, avocados, apples, raspberries, kiwis and plums. And if you want more variety than that, it’s easy to supplement your diet with mangoes and melons. Just get in touch with your local farmer’s market and learn how to start a new business from conception to execution!
