You can’t get enough of health tips, especially ones that promise quick results. But what if you could pick the brains of some of the top experts in the health industry? And what if you could get your questions answered about diet, exercise, and more? If you’re looking to live a healthier lifestyle but want to know exactly how to do it right, check out these seven amazing diet tips from the experts.

1) Eat balanced meals

If you don’t know what to eat, it’s time to learn. Work on balancing your meals with a variety of proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. And aim for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. If eating right seems like a lot of work, reach out to a dietitian in your area who can create meal plans based on your specific lifestyle goals and daily schedule.

2) Eat 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day

There’s no debate that we should be consuming more fruits and vegetables, especially since they provide essential vitamins and nutrients our bodies need to thrive. The USDA’s dietary guidelines recommend five to nine servings each day of fruits and vegetables for most adults (and eight or more for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding). Eating a variety of colors—red, green, orange, yellow, purple—helps ensure you’re getting all of the antioxidants available in plant foods.

3) Don’t overdo it on dairy products

Dairy products can help a person reach their daily recommended calcium intake, but overdoing it on these foods can lead to greater calorie consumption. Plus, some people may be lactose intolerant, which makes dairy consumption even more problematic. If you’re trying to lose weight or cut calories, be mindful of how much cheese and yogurt you’re consuming. Rather than using full-fat products all of the time, go for lower-fat options or opt for non-dairy items when possible.

4) Eat lean protein like seafood, poultry, legumes, eggs, beans and nuts

A diet high in lean protein can help you lose weight by making you feel fuller, so you’re less likely to overeat. Protein is important for your muscles and helps your body build and repair tissues. Choose lean cuts of meat and seafood. Many low-fat dairy products are good sources of protein and calcium, too, including yogurt, milk, cheese, cottage cheese and fortified soy beverages.

5) Drink lots of water

Whether you’re eating right or not, it’s essential to stay hydrated throughout your day. It can be easy to forget to drink enough water—especially if you like a nice glass of wine with dinner—but staying hydrated will help keep you feeling full and energized as well as fight off cravings that could lead to overeating. Make sure you have a water bottle on hand and make it fun with infused waters or infusing herbs for flavor!

6) Avoid processed foods

Processed foods and products, especially junk food like frozen pizza, cookies, and soda are notoriously bad for your health. They contain a host of chemicals that can raise blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and insulin levels while lowering your energy level—definitely not healthy! The best way to avoid processed foods is to stay away from convenience stores; if you have no choice but to shop there once in a while, look for fresh fruit or vegetables on sale.

7) Eat dinner early in the evening

For weight loss, a recent study published in Obesity found that eating dinner earlier in the evening as opposed to later can help you shed some pounds. The researchers note that eating earlier in general tended to be more effective than eating late. The idea is that our bodies process food differently depending on what time of day it is: Our metabolism is fast-paced first thing in the morning and starts to slow down after about 10 hours. By speeding up your metabolism, you allow your body to burn calories faster and thus lose weight quickly.
