5 Tips for Cleaning Out Your Closet and Dresser
Clothing is better when you can find what you want to wear.
I’ve found that the more clothing I bring into my home, the less room I have for all of it. Maybe you face this issue as well. I am also one of those people that doesn’t like to pack clothing up at the end of a season - I want to know what clothes I own all year round.
So, when your closet and dresser begin to overflow, what can you do? Here are the things I do in order to keep my closet and dresser organized and free of the items that just aren’t working for me anymore.
1. Take time to try stuff on.
One of my biggest pet peeves about Marie Kondo’s Tidying Up TV show on Netflix was that she has people stack clothes, touch them for a spark of joy, and then get rid of them if they don't bring joy. With clothing, I feel like part of the “joy” in an item is how it looks and feels on you.
My advice, before you get rid of any items of clothing, try them on first. Put things on as you’d wear them out of the house and take a strut through your home. Check them out in the mirror. See if wearing that outfit or item makes you feel joy before you toss it in the donation pile.
2. If you haven’t worn it in 6 months, get rid of it.
One of the rules I love when it comes to decluttering your home is to get rid of things you haven’t used in 6 months or more. This is excellent for cleaning out your clothes. Aside from the changing of the seasons, if you have clothing items you haven't worn in six months or more, it’s pretty likely you’re never going to wear them—why not donate them so someone else can have a chance to find joy in that article of clothing?
Not sure how to tell if you’ve worn something in the last six months? It’s not difficult. Hang all of your hangers backward in your closet, then put a mark on your calendar for 6 months from now to remind you to check your closet. As you wear your clothes, hang them back up with the hangers the “right” way, and any hangers that are still backward show you which clothes haven’t been touched. Donate them without second guessing yourself!
3. Discard items with rips or stains.
Unless you’re an artist or planning to do some messy home renovations, you have no reason to hold onto ripped and stained clothing. Even then, you only need one or two junk outfits. Throw the rest of it out, or put it in the recycle bin. Don’t donate these clothes, unless it’s to a company that uses them for rags or craft projects.
4. Know your style.
If you tried to make a style change and it didn’t work for you, don’t hold onto those clothes just because you have them. If you’re not going to wear them, they are clutter taking up space where clothes you do like and wear could be stored.
There’s nothing wrong with mixing styles or changing styles. The thing is, you want to wear the stuff. If you’re not wearing it, it’s worthless.
5. Get better organized.
Organizing clothing is where Tidying Up with Marie Kondo came in handy for me. Dressers are the bane of my existence. Stacking clothing in those drawers makes it so I have to dig to find what I want. Marie Kondo shows viewers how to fold and organize clothing in drawers in a way that allows you to see everything in the drawer when you open it. Watch the show, read her books, and take her advice if you want more room in your dresser drawers!
When it comes to organizing the closet, I am obsessed with lining my clothing up by color. I break them up by items, sleeve length (for shirts), and then color.
Once you've cleaned out your closet and dresser, you'll be left with the clothing you love—and you'll be less stressed when it's time to get dressed!
