Writing is not as simple as many believe, writing is an art, a tool passed down for many generations. It has developed in so many ways. By combining words into structured sentences to help the reader imagine what the author is saying. Writing is a powerful tool that helps you see into the mind of someone else; it also is a form of communication and a way to record our history. At least that’s how I personally feel about writing. I believe writing is an amazing gift and I am beyond thankful for having the ability to read and write.

Starting a book with very limited knowledge is challenging, which is okay, I like a good challenge. Luckily with the help of Google, I can overcome any challenge thrown at me. I never went to an actual high school. I was a troubled teen who self-harmed and was sent away to a behavioral institution for harming myself when I got overly upset. Depressing, gruesome, and horrible, I know, but my past has taught me a lot and I do not regret the things I have learned. Many children go through self-harm, I am blessed to have people care enough to send me away to get the help I needed. For those who are reading this right now who self-harm or have ever self-harmed, I am here to tell you things do get better if you keep moving forward. You may ask how any of this contributes to me writing my first novel. For starters, writing has always been an escape for me. Growing up in a broken home I was either nose deep in a good book or I was writing my own small short stories and poems. If I could go back in time and retrieve all my short stories, believe me, I would. I would have already had a book or two published if I could, haha. Secondly, I like to intertwine my life experiences into my fictitious books and stories. I may write about vampires, werewolves, pixies, etc… but I also throw in a few of my personal childhood memories with a twist into my books as well. Being able to accept the past and making a use of memories that may not have been so great, helps with coping, accepting, and finding peace within myself. Lastly, writing helps with overthinking about the past. Why not put my coping mechanisms to good use? Maybe I will be able to inspire a few people along the way.

Writing the first chapter was very simple for me to do. I love to write, and ideas always come to me like a flowing river that’s forever changing. Idea’s just simply come and branch out like a tree. When ideas begin to slow that’s when I know I need a break for a little while to recharge. Walking helps a lot. I love nature and the outdoors, it’s my inspiration. Finding inspiration, to me, is one of the most important things when it comes to writing or drawing. Without having anything to be inspired by things can become a bit dull and chore-like when you want to sit down and write. I believe the key to writing a successful story is to first find what inspires you and go from there.

Furthermore, research is a great help when writing a book. Even if it seems tedious and boring, find time to research. Throwing familiar things in a book helps your audience feel more connected. Many people become bored with a book if it does not connect with them on some type of level. Research, find out what the people are interested in, find a way to intertwine what the people like into your story, but do it in your own unique way. With today’s access to almost everything, thanks to the internet, researching should be no problem. (Except mustering up the want to part, haha).

Also, finding the perfect time and place to write can be a major help when it comes to writing. Everyone is different, some people might need a calm quiet place to write, others, like me, can write with noise and chaos in the background. Taking time out of the day, even if it’s for 30 minutes, helps keep the creative mind flowing. If you feel stuck on what to write there are many websites that give prompts. I use 30-day poetry challenge prompts to keep the creative part of my brain flowing. I will be sharing my poetry on this site as well. If you can, try writing every day even if it’s not towards anything major.

In conclusion, writing can be a great way to express yourself and can even help when feeling down. Some of my best writings come from me being depressed. Life isn’t all sunshine and daisies. Writing can be a challenge at times, especially when you can’t think about what to write. Getting out and finding new inspiration can help and take your mind of not being able to think. Sometimes the mind becomes too overwhelmed. Finding time and researching are also good ways to help with writing an excellent book. If you have access to the internet use it for good instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media pages. I’ve been there and done that, so much time is wasted just scrolling, posting, and waiting to see if someone likes it or not. A quote I like to say often is, whether you believe you can, or you can’t, you’re right. With practice, you can learn to master anything, including writing.
