I agree with many when they say you cannot force the words. They will come to you eventually.

There are many ways in which you can get there: working on something else, forcing yourself to stare at a blank screen, forcing yourself to write, just simply saying that you are done for the day.

No matter which way you choose, the writing will form itself.

How many times have you gone up to an author as an aspiring author hoping for advice that will inspire you only to find that they are as knowledgeable as you as to how their work formed the life that it did?

Many, many times I have gone to the computer screen, needing inspiration, tried to watch interviews and videos as to the secrets of other writers who inspire me. Then all they say of any real consequence is to just start writing.

So I do. I practically rip my hair out in frustration as I frantically try to come up with an arc, a twist of some kind that will fool the audience, a compelling ending that will leave them on a cliffhanger so as to make another book but with a sense of completeness so they don't feel cheated.

Don't even get me started on trying to come up with something that would seem original in a world where nothing is new.

You can't please everyone.

That phrase has got to be the bane of my existence both as a writer and in general. You can prepare for negativity all the live long day, but when it comes for the work that you have spent hours, weeks, months, and even years on you cannot help but feel off.

It is a natural reaction and one that you cannot escape.

Yet, there is a wisdom in what they are saying. Let us break it down to two simple words that could have many different perspectives.

Just write.

It is the way in which you read it. It could be a command, it could be a call to action, it could be a patient piece of advice, it could be a phrase that you get disappointed and roll your eyes at.

In the end it could just be the thing that makes your story.

In fact, I promise you it is.

As you begin to type out the words, or write them (if you are like me and want to record them on paper first) you find yourself letting the words take control.

They take on a life of their own forming a world that wasn't even envisioned in your mind. You read as your hands continue to skim over the keys. You love what is being written and are so excited as you type faster and faster with seemingly no limit.

All of the sudden your hands stop of their own accord and you did not finish the act, the chapter, the scene, or even the sentence. You read over what you have written and find that you like the way the story was unfolding.

It comes in sporadic moments and typically when you are are not knowing where to go with the story. As the story writes itself you find that you have been taken along on the ride from the start. The characters, the plot, the storylines are all not what you had planned originally but you could not have said it any better.

As you read your story and start to show others. You realize that the true secret of the story is not how many hours you write, how many big words you can throw in to sound impressive, no matter how much you had planned, the story led you from the start.

You just had to relinquish your will to the story.

You never plan for the story to take on a life of its own, but it always does. That is the staple of the best stories. They create themselves and move in the realm of reality to the writer and the reader. It has a significance beyond the knowledge that it is an imaginary scenario, in an imaginary world, with imaginary characters.

The experience of writing is at it's finest when you allow the story to take over. It is just what needs to happen.

You will never be able to get to that point until you start writing. Even when it is hard just keep writing because the story will eventually come to you. Do not force it.

That is the power of words. They will come flowing naturally in the end and as long as you hone the craft, be diligent, and consistently sit down to write then you will be successful with what you do.
