Launching your business into the cloud is one of the most beneficial moves you can make for its longevity and overall success. Many people don’t know how the cloud works — or really even what it is — yet, cloud-based services are so prevalent these days you’re probably already using them regularly without realizing it. So, why is the cloud so essential to your business? It ensures:

Business Continuity

It’s important to be ready for anything that might disrupt the business cycle. A natural disaster, a computer virus, system hack or any other unanticipated crisis can potentially lead to business failure if there’s too much loss or downtime. At a minimum, such interruptions will lead to decreased productivity and lost income for you and your employees. Having all your important data stored in the cloud means that even in the wake of a disaster, important files can be accessed from another location. Business can, therefore, continue until the problem is resolved.

Simple and Secure Backup

In the days before the cloud existed, backing up computer data was an ordeal. It took away from time that could be better spent producing revenue. A backup drive (preferably in another location) was necessary to keep your business’s data secure. However, traditional backup methods aren’t always reliable due to mechanical failure or human error. Storage capacity could also be an issue. Furthermore, these backup methods aren’t immune to security issues. Cloud-based services make backups extremely easy; some automatically backup in the background with no effort or wait time on your part. It backs up in a secure location off-premises where it can be accessed at any time from anywhere with an internet connection. Recovering the data is nearly effortless and will typically be a background operation as you’re working on other things.

Data Storage Scalability

Backing up to the cloud means easy system storage scalability. You don’t have to worry about limited storage space. You can simply and instantly buy more cloud space when you need it instead of investing time and money in costly system upgrades. Having your data in the cloud means there’s no need for many, if any, IT crew and also no need for a dedicated server room. Conversely, you don’t have to pay for a bunch of extra storage that you don’t need. If you downsize, you can purchase less storage. If your business grows, you can buy more.

Mobile Flexibility and Collaboration

One of the most advantageous elements of cloud computing is the flexibility to access the data and collaborate from anywhere with an internet connection. Information can easily be viewed, edited and shared. Some cloud services offer real-time collaboration in which you can hold virtual meetings. Whether working from home or on a business trip, you and your colleagues will find cloud computing simple and secure. Cloud-based platforms also allow for access across devices, and it gives you the flexibility of hiring people from around the world.

Quality Control

A lot of paper-handling in an office space can lead to many inconsistencies and misplacement of important documents and files. When your data is stored in the cloud, it’s in one location where it can’t be accessed or manipulated by just anyone. Updates and edits are also recorded.

Environmental Sustainability

Possibly one of the greatest benefits to come from the development of cloud engineering is greater environmental sustainability. Working with cloud-based services is much more environmentally friendly than dealing with paper documents. Additionally, you’ll save on your power bills because cloud storage is much more energy-efficient than powering physical system hardware. You’ll enjoy the clean desk that’s free of mounds of papers; physical copies are only printed if they’re needed. In addition to saving paper, commuter-related emissions (e.g., gasoline) will be saved whenever your team works remotely.

Once integrated into your business, you’ll find the cloud to be an invaluable resource. Begin by gradually adding services and you’ll quickly realize the benefits.
