Working from home may sound like a dream, but without the proper environment it can quickly devolve into a nightmare. You have control over a lot more than you do in an office, so you need to make sure that you are handling those aspects responsibly. Set yourself up for success with some common best practices for a self-employed lifestyle.

Equipment

Depending on what your job is, different types of equipment are required. You should clarify this with your employer first, before making any purchases. What kind of computer is appropriate- a laptop, desktop or both? Do you need a webcam? How about a sound recorder? Do you have all of the necessary software? You might even need to look into IOT platforms to connect multiple devices to your employer's interface. Sometimes your employer will help you cover the expenses, or you can use them as tax exemptions.

Connection

Working from home requires you to have a reliable internet connection- this may be the most important requirement for the position. It could be worth your money to invest in upgrading your service, if this is possible. If not, there are tools you can buy to boost your internet connection and speeds from inside your home. For example, you can buy a newer router if you have an older version like 802.11n or 802.11g. You should look for version 802.11ac. You should also make sure that your connection is secure, to protect your work and personal information from hackers. Be sure that you have firewalls and anti-virus software installed on all of your devices.

Space

Once your basics are all set up, make sure to give yourself and private and comfortable space to do your work in. It will help to keep you focused and happy during working hours. Be sure not to skimp on your chair selection, seeing as you'll be spending a lot of time in it. Lighting can also greatly influence your mood, so make sure you have plenty of light. Natural light is best, if possible. Give yourself a large desk, with plenty of organizational tools. Find a mouse-pad that offers wrist support. Spruce up your space with personal touches and decorate with what makes you happy, just try not to clutter up your area too much.

Schedule

Your job may require specific hours from you, but if it doesn't, it is helpful to set-up and stick to your own schedule. Use a calendar to plan out how many hours you need to work that month, and when you will be working them. This will keep you on track and help clear your mind to focus on your tasks and stay on top of projects. It will also help your free time feel more like free time, so that you don't have to keep work on your mind 24/7. There are helpful apps and digital calendars that you can download and sync with all your devices. Be sure to communicate your schedule to all relevant parties so that you can set firm boundaries for non-working hours, as well.

Motivation

There are plenty of things you can do to help motivate yourself throughout the day, if you don't have coworkers and bosses around to do that for you. Incorporate structured break times into your schedule to keep your mind fresh. Set task related goals, and reward yourself once you reach them. These rewards can be as simple as a chocolate, or allowing yourself to beat one more level on your video game. Make yourself an inspiring playlist, and feel free to sing the lyrics at the top of your lungs, because you're working from home.

Once you've given yourself the best possible work environment, you're sure to see your productivity skyrocket. You'll feel clear-headed, organized and focused with the proper surroundings. Don't short-change yourself by not giving yourself every possible tool to succeed. Then you can truly enjoy all the benefits that working from home brings you.
