The 7 Day Theory (Part 2)

A social social experiment

Hello, my name is Donald Whitaker and I'm a marketing genius. That's a pretty bold statement to make seeing as how I never went to school for marketing. I actually have no formal training outside of a few Udemy courses and sneaking into business classes every now and again when I had free time at Maryland (Go Terps!). I randomly fell into this field but fell in love with the freedom that came with it. A few friends decided to let me coordinate their social media campaigns for their businesses and 10 years later here I am writing this love letter to the digital marketing gods.

Now before we go too far down the autobiographical rabbit hole let's clear a few things up...

  1. This isn't some cocky, I'm smarter than you BS. Simply my story in my tone.
  2. If you're easily offended you might want to tread carefully.
  3. Fish.Scale
  4. My writing style is unique so sorry, not sorry for professionalism or lack thereof.
  5. Feed these algorithms. Like, Subscribe, and Share pretty please. Thanks!

Back to the show...

*snaps* Wait! Before I forget.

Did you peep the grammatical error?

Yeah, yeah, I know, "shit there were a few." But I meant the one that looked like I did it on purpose?

No? Well, look up real quick and tell me if you see it.

That didn't take long, did it?

Pretty ain't she?!

That's an Arowana AKA a dragon fish and also the logo for my marketing company, dragonFish.

Now let's take a smoke break and recap what just happened here.

Better yet... perfect time for a magic trick. Close your eyes.

You are going about your lovely Monday morning, reading about the Emmy winners and who was "Best/Worst dressed," maybe just about to start looking busy at work or getting back from that not long enough lunch. Then for whatever reason you clicked on this article and you started reading. And you read a little bit more. Maybe even played along with my little third grade love letter trick up there *you can laugh* .

Now you may or may not have just realized two things:

  • I just told you to close your eyes and read so if you tried it and failed no worries it's our little secret. Just know I'm most certainly laughing at AND with you right now.
  • I just marketed my business to you. On a social network. For free.

...

Right? Kinda Sorta?

Let's continue...

You see I discovered an under-appreciated niche in the process of creating dragonFish.

YOU.

What has social media become? An echo chamber of opinions where everybody has a voice, so everybody wants to be heard. Eventually everybody will end up saying/doing the same thing. And how do you stand out if you're trying fit in?

See we speak to the ambitious creative inside of your audience. That part of people that can not even grasp the concept of limits. The rebellious voice in the back of your mind that says "why can't we?" The LoZer.

At the end of the day if the product is good, it will sell itself, I mean that's just science, and you can't argue with science, champ. A quality product simply needs people to know that it exist. So if my job is to just put attention on a brand, and get it in front of people, I can do that in my sleep.

Literally.

Have a sip of that water. I promise we're about to wrap this up, give me 20 more seconds *you can laugh again* .

So to put a bow on things. I decided to bet on myself and do things my way. And if you're a small business owner, friend of friend, or Jane Doe big wig of marketing for Nike... just know that "YES! dragonFish. can do it" when it comes to marketing, digital or otherwise.

How do you know?

Simple.

I managed to get you to take a second out of your day to read this unnecessarily long blog post just because you liked the title, or my resume, or simply of out curiosity as to what the hell will Donnie come up with next. Because for the friends and family that will read this they know that...

"... if Donnie doesn't have anything else, he has an idea for you..."

Nobody in my family has said that before FYI. I just made that up.

*hope that one made you laugh out loud.*

In conclusion. My name is Donald Whitaker, marketing genius. And if I can use my special inception powers to put THREE of my own brands in your mind using 1 FREE LinkedIn post with one link. What makes you think I cant convince somebody to buy those new muffins from your bakery or use your dog food delivery app?

And I can do it using ANY kind of marketing budget.

My secret? I know how to connect with people, and I enjoy sharing stories. And that's all marketing is... connecting to people by telling a story. Some people pay thousands of dollars for that kind of marketing 101, but I just gave it to you for free.

Because I wanted to.

I understand that the value isn't in the bullshit sales pitches or same old marketing gimmicks. The value is in understanding people and how to grab their attention.

So by now at the very least we both should be able to agree that I might know a little bit about what I'm saying, no?

So you can go to www.godragonfish.com to get...

Huh? You still need convincing? Really fam???

Cool.

I'll just show you. I'm going to start a website/business today from scratch and track the progress for seven days. You can follow along, and next Tuesday we can discuss the results. It'll be like a... wait for it... A SOCIAL SOCIAL EXPERIMENT *tada*

Magic.

So for a few moments of your time every day for the next week I'll show you that I can take ANY RANDOM IDEA, and turn it into a thriving business. Yes, I'm that confident in my jumper.

Bet? Bet.

Any Questions? Comments? Concerns?

And check back tomorrow for the next episode.

Oh. And please share it if you thought it was funny or dope, because if you don't, you just might be a hater. That's more science. Peace.
