Swiggy VS Zomato: A UX & UI Study

It's very interesting to see how these two companies are competing and innovating every now and then.

There's healthy competition between Swiggy and Zomato and it's working out well for both of them.

I have tried my best to keep this report as fair as possible and there are chances that as I am publishing this article, both these apps would have undergone some changes already. This summarized article covers the UX and UI aspects of both these apps and how they differ from each other. I have tried to focus on their positives.

Positives- Swiggy

Swiggy.

1. Landing Page: I prefer Swiggy. Can see a snippet of restaurants recommended for me than the generic ones on Zomato that are cuisines ordered by others.

2. User Interface: Again, I prefer Swiggy. Somehow Zomato has a very confusing interface with the Go Out, Gold, Deliver, etc buttons.

3. Swiggy has cards like "Restaurants, Grocery, Fruits & Vegetables" with real-life images of the respective categories which makes me choose a category very quickly. In the case of Zomato, I can't get a glance at their offerings in one go.

4. Zomato is too texty.

5. Zomato is not constant with its UX-UI interface. They keep changing it every other week.

6. Both of these apps have to show the discount information as it is the single most important factor in driving a sale. But look at how they have chosen to embed the information.

7. Zomato has changed priorities while restaurant finding is still there but not the primary focus now. Coming to Swiggy, since its inception, their app is only into one thing - food delivery.

Although now Swiggy has tried to fill that void by launching Swiggy Instamart. Launched in August 2020, Instamart claims to deliver several categories of products like Instant meals, snacks, fruits and vegetables, ice creams, and more within 45 min.

8. All in all, Swiggy's app is perfect with nothing much going on in the app. You open it and you are greeted with restaurants around your selected location. You tap it, add your food to the cart, pay, and track the order. Keeping things simple, surely has its advantages - the app is very breezy to use, things just fly by with the simple animations and its neat and clean design

9. But even Zomato has been undergoing major changes and they have really improved when it comes to the user experience(UX). So they are not much behind when it comes to their user interface(UI).

Positives- Zomato

Zomato.

1. Zomato remembers the last used option and uses it as a default option unless changed by the user, this does reduce the time in placing an order. Swiggy doesn't do that and it directly provides you with a list of payment options to choose from.

2. Before finalizing the order, Zomato also provides suggestions to add to the bill based on popular add-ons.

3. Zomato gives you interesting taglines and facts while transitioning from one page to another. It is not a user requirement but why not use space and time.

4. When you open the Zomato app, there's a large banner at the top that speaks in a large font - "Food Delivery is Safe", assuaging our fears around it.

5. As mentioned above, Zomato provides specific details about the guidelines a restaurant is adhering to, through labels, which makes sense as people also refer to Zomato before dining out and it provides details about a restaurant's hygiene and safety practices. Swiggy shows a badge for specific restaurants, who adhere to safety and health guidelines but doesn't go into much detail about it.

6. Zomato's business point is unique and different in relation to Swiggy. If we take a glance at Zomato, it centers around food alone. If we want to find out what a decent food restaurant to visit or if you want to order food online, or check out the food, we go to Zomato. Swiggy centers around its delivery ecosystem. They're currently exploring new fields into delivering groceries, medicines, anything, etc. So, I feel that this can be a deciding factor for Swiggy in the coming years. The only common factor, that we go about is that they both are into food delivery services.

7. Right after the login, Swiggy took me to my account page. Presently I don't have a clue whether it's the case with every user, but, the question is if I'm hungry wouldn't I want to see some food first?

8. Swiggy only gives the option of logging in through your mobile number whereas Zomato gives other options too.

9. Swiggy has designed its account page to be less intuitive. On the account page, when you scroll you don't see any important factor, there are insights on your past orders, and as opposed to looking over additional, you want to go to different pages, and all things considered check food instead. On the other hand, Zomato's account page is very engaging. It even has a profile of the user. Checking it, I saw many people have maintained their profile page, where they write reviews about restaurants, add photographs. You can follow your fellow foodie companions. Eating and updating reviews add up to the stats, where one review can get you 25 points and from just being a foodie, you can upgrade yourself to become connoisseur(expert judge), sharing it with your community.

10. Swiggy has designed its account page less interactive due to the low contrast. You will feel like scrolling and exiting, rather than engaging.
