A Review of An Excellent Contemporary Fantasy

LIGHT and Darkness is a book by AM Radulescu which was recently published, and as we are Vocal friends I purchased an ebook copy from Amazon to read on my Kindle. I am more of a physical book reader but find the Kindle a convenient reading mechanism.

I have only read three books on the Kindle , they are Clive Barker’s “Imajica” , Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” (twice) and now “Darkness and Light” by Ana.

The book's concept is basically a Fantasy but with lots of anchors and references in today's world, leaning heavily on Harry Potter and the DC/Marvel mythological source universes for pointers and names but not for the story.

The thing is by the time I finished this book I realised I had thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is well laid out with space between paragraphs so it makes it easy to read.

So we have Ana the main protagonist and her partner in a normal situation somewhere in America, and then an unexpected meeting with someone who is not quite what they seem, although extremely rich and able to pursue a certainly non standard life furrow and becomes Ana’s mentor.

At first you think things may seem a little derivative , but it builds layer upon layer , drawing you into the story , keeping you in suspense about what is really happening. For me it did grow into a page turner , me thinking what is going to happen next. I needed to know ,and finishing the book in three days shows how much I enjoyed it.

I do remember finishing “Dark Rivers of The Heart” by Dean Koontz in one sitting and “Reasons To Stay Alive” by Matt Haig on a train journey to London , but they are major exception, so though “LIGHT and Darkness” is shorter , I still got through it , in my opinion, fairly quickly.

We are soon introduced to the fact there is an ongoing war between Darkness and Light / Good and Evil. Ana and her mentor are parts of the Light fighting the Darkness. The dark side of the equation is fulfilled by some extremely well described encounters between the dark and the light , and the good thing about the book is you don’t know if anyone or everyone will come out of this, so there is a definite jeopardy factor in there that does pull you in further and further.

I also saw a lot of my own personal situation in the book, seeing myself as one of the characters, who you can probably guess it is if you read it , and also other people in my life are there. I don’t think Ana knows much about my personal life even though we are friends , but maybe lots of readers will see themselves in there.

I obviously cannot tell you what happens , I would rather that you found out for yourself by buying your own copy , and if you have a penchant and love for fantasy then you will really enjoy this.

This is the first book I have read by a Vocal creator and am now thinking what am I missing from others and this has been so enjoyable. You may think I am biased or partisan because of my Vocal and Facebook friendship, but if this had not been a worthy read , it would not have been finished and would have stayed in digital limbo. As I have said I have only read three novels on digital media but have well over a hundred on my device , I will not run out of things to read. The fact that this book has drawn me in shows what a good read it is.

This probably started with Project Gutenberg where volunteers copied out of copyright texts onto digital format , and because of that when Ana published this I could buy, download , read and enjoy instantly .

I led with Horslips "Sword of Light" because , well read the book.
